alpha / depthbuffer or something like that :)

I''m trying to create a game with a static background and some objects in front of it. At some areas should the objects go "behind" the background and become invisible. I think I need to directly manipulate the depthbuffer and use some kind of alpha image. Any suggestions, source? thnx
