According to the roadmap, they've added some languages to it already. That website might have more information about how to display Russian text in xmms.

The last stable release of XMMS is over three years old, and it's using the old GTK+ 1.x which, as far as I know, doesn't support unicode. Many distros doesn't even include XMMS anymore. So unless your dead set on XMMS there are lots of other newer players out there too, like audacious or bmp if you want a xmms-clone.
Well, as far as I know, there is a new version of xmms which has been under development for some time. XMMS2 :) . I don't know if it supports internationalization, as I don't use XMMS at all. It doesn't support Bulgarian either, so I gave up using it a long time ago. There are some freaks at linux-bg.org that claim to have succeeded in making XMMS draw Cyrillic characters, but it's boasting, if you ask me. I would advise you to use either Amarok (which is fancy, but way too slow on my PC) or the KDE or GNOME default music players (which seem to have a little set of features, but are at least far faster than Amarok).
