Well as of Friday night I was about 80% finished with the tutorial, but I didn't touch it over the weekend because my wife and I spent the weekend at the beach.

Anyway, I'm fairly confident I should be able to finish and post it late tonight, probably between 10:30 and 11:30 pm Pacific Time since I'm working overtime and won't get off work until later. I'm putting a bit more detail into it than I originally planned, but I figured that it would help improve my website. I might also create a smaller second tutorial to go along with it that addresses how to deal with the terrain in regard to game engines. The tutorial shows how to get terrain to deform to match the track, but this is only useful if you plan on importing your terrain into whatever game engine/editor your using as static meshes. So I want to make another tutorial that shows how you can take the terrain geometry from the race track tutorial and generate a height map from it that can be used in a game engine since most large exterior environments make use of height maps.

However, I don't know if the second tutorial will be finished by tonight. Most likely it will be finished sometime tomorrow evening, but the first tutorial has enough info in it to keep anyone busy for a little while.

go signup at photobucket.com and use that place to host your images, then use the html tags
<*img src="img url" *> (without the *'s).

Well I completed the first tutorial last night but unfortunately the connection to my host server kept timing out so I wasn't able to upload it to my website. I'll try to upload it again tonight and see if I have better luck.

Wow, slow day yesterday for the Visual Arts forum.

Anyway, I was finally able to upload the tutorial last night, which took a while because of all the images.

I'll eventually divide it into separate parts, but for now its all one long page so it will take a while to load even for a high-speed connection. I also haven't taken the chance to proof read or spell check yet so I apologize in advance for any errors. I should also mention that I wrote the tutorial for a broader artist audience so if you're already familiar with some of the information provided just skip ahead.

The tutorial covers how to make a track using Max's loft object then the process of binding terrain to the track. It covers additional techniques including material application, UV's to a small extent, and some basic poly modeling practices. I decided to use Max's compound loft object as opposed to NURBS because you get to see your results in polys instead of having to guess what your end product will look like after doing a conversion. Max NURBS are also a pain to work with.

At any rate here it is:

It's long, but it's mostly images.

I'll be posting a second related tutorial for this soon, which will show how you can generate a heightmap for use in a game engine from terrain created in Max. Hope this helps.
thanks for the tutorial, i'll check it out later on.
