Texturing problem
Hello, I am a beginner 3d artist, and I was wondering if I could receive some assistance with some texturing problems. I am trying to make mountainous terrain, that transitions from grass to snow based on elevation. When I applied the appropriate textures, they really didn't blend well. The transition from grass to snowy grass went all right, but when I wanted to have the most elevated parts of the terrain just snow, the textures did not blend well. Here is a picture of the terrain in progress:
As you can see there are some problems. I have already dealt with the hole in the mountain, but thats not my main concern. Can anyone give me any advice or links to some free software than can help me blend these better?
FYI: This is the first time I really textured anything like this; I am still learning. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Not knowing what program you're using it's hard to say why it's yielding hard edges between the two textures. However, one of the problems that is immediately obvious is that your texture is stretching along the vertical areas of your heightmap. This is because the same texture space is having to cover a much larger and irregular surface area. I would try making a more gradual transition with the mountain geometry to minimize this.
If you absolutely need a sheer vertical cliff face to your mountain you'd be better using a static mesh since the UVs can be controlled to produce better results. However, since you're a beginner it seems unlikely that you know how to efficiently lay out UVs yet. I would suggest looking up tutorials on the basics, such as modeling and UVs.
BTW, what program are you using?

I am using 3d Studio MAX version 8. I know very little about UV's and such. Today in school i had an idea to just mix the grass and snow textures, the transition will be heavier. But then again, I'm not sure.
You should read some tutorials or even the manual to learn UV Mapping. For a this straight slope you may need to unwrap the mesh. Looks like it is simply planar mapped from the top. And because of the angles of your slope some parts are just covered by a few pixels. Which stretches this few pixels across this part. And that doesn't look nice :)
