MMORPG Handheld Connection?
Well i'm working on my MMORPG (unfortunately solo but thats how it has to be...) I'm happy to report I'm almost to alpha (still alot to do though.) But in my free time I like to think about the future features of the game. My friend found this J2ME book on programming for cell phones. I also in Massively Multiplayer Game Development[\u] read about Cell phones and MMORPGs. They talked about a who MMO for a cell phone but that would be a bit too much in my opinion! Well I would use the cell phone as more of a tool partnered with the computer. I was thinking guild management and access to the auction house type of building where items are put up for sale. As well as viewing the news about the game. But the real question is, Is there a big enough "need" (more like want.) for such access? Is it even worth the effort? What other features should it have? I dont know of any MMO that does it so far so it would be a nifty feature! You could chat with your guild and manage your item auctions/sales. Maybe check your mail box?
It doesn't sound like a bad idea.
It would be nice if MMOs had this feature. At least it will give the player the ability to handle money and guild issues away from the PC which will give him more time to play the game later on (it would be really great for someone like me -_-).
FFXI had a feature to send and read game messeges from their site. I used it all the time to talk to friends and linkshell members to plan what will do when we log in next.
Having a MMOs that allowes you to access the game (or some features at least) through other means than the game it self is a plus.
You got my vote :P

Eve Online has a cell phone client in the works, word is they are just fixing security flaws before release. It will allow you to check your mail and change skills (skills train whether you are playing or not, so the only grind is time). Since some skills finish at bad times, like when you are at work and can't log on, being able to change skills from a phone would be much welcome to the community.
Cool It will be a while before I actually have the game up to the point where it can use the cell phone partner. Right now it doesnt have the network code =( my understanding of sockets wasnt quite up to par as I thought it was. I'm reading alot so it should be done soon =D. But what I do have is the world loading system using XML files placing objects about the world. As well as half the editor done for placing them! It also has the player mechanics to move the players about the world it just needs the network to tell it where to move them. So i've made minor progress the server is still tons away but i'm busy with school so I have to devote my time to that...
Well good luck with that :)
I'm not sure what is needed to access servers through cells but hoppfully it wouldn't be THAT complicated.
If worst goes to worst, you can let the player use SMS to communicate with the game (it's possibal I think). It's not much but it's a start.

J2ME has a sockets library the book covers 2 chapters on multiplayer gaming via a cell phone!

You do realise that alpha means "feature complete", right? I wouldn't call a MMO with no network code "almost to alpha". [razz]

Since when have Alpha builds been 'feature complete'?, I've never heard of a single piece of software that was in Alpha stage that didn't have at least one fairly large feature to finish.

Alpha has always meant feature complete, just because most projects bend the rules doesn't change the definition of the word.

Well its shakey network code its not no network code its incomplete network code. It basically refuses to do its purpose in a timely neat fashion which is the only thing standing between me and alpha so I'm almost to alpha. Geeze people and there literal takes on things! Does every thread need a constructive comments only line at the start or does everyone have to be stupid and rant on about how your wrong about one line in your freaking post. Congradulations you have ruined a good thread, what else will you do you social paracite?! The goal of a forum is to form a constructive community of a certain group. This is a game devlopement forum it is to gather game devs around the world an unite them to constructively help eachother with their individual and group projects. If you do not help then your not using the forum right. Please refrain from posting destructive criticism.
But back to the topic before we were rudely interupted -.-' It occured to me that if you could access your mailbox from anywhere via your cellphone you could in effect in the middle of a dungeon retrieve supplies by sending them in the mail to urself and withdrawing them later in the dungeon. So inorder to prevent this I could remove it all together or make it so you have to be logged out and in a major town in order to use the mailbox feature.
