Game design application practice
I am looking for 3 people who are interested in doing some design theory exercises . They will be biased from the book "Rules of play". I will explain more to those who are interested. Only msges from people who are willing to complete tasks in the time given to them. I am looking for people who truly want to enhance there game design skills as I do. So if you cant do with commitment than do not message me please. Some of it will be individual while others will involve group work. Well replay here if your interested as well as msg me. I will be assessing first come first serve biases I might expand it to more people after the first couple of sessions. And if those people enjoy them. The activities will be based on singling out specific theories and concepts for designing games and applying them. Please if your not willing to commit to deadlines for a project or willing to take some time out for a meeting roughly twice a week. Do not apply for this. I want people who truly want to enhance there designing skills. [Edited by - FadedPhoenix on January 13, 2007 11:09:37 PM]
Alright im a little disapointed. I thought that there would be some people really interested in tryin to work in a group mannor to increase there design abilities. Is there no one here interested in doing that? Or does any one know a place where i can find people who will be interested in doing that. Because i just think you can think about design all the time you want. But untill you apply the concepts and talk with others about it and hear there opions. Than its just hypothetical.
O well just wondering.
O well just wondering.
The idea is interesting.
However, note the following:
* You have poor grammar. Are you sure you will be able to communicate properly and give a good impression to your posible team mates?
* You are looking for 3 persons only. Gives the impression you want to create a little group and leave everybody else out, which doesn't sounds comfortable. With time you will get opportunities to meet people you will like to add to your team.
* You sound more strict than necesary. Because of this and my previous note, it doesn't seems like there will be a relaxed atmosphere for the rest of the group. And you probably want control of whatever the group does.
* Saying that the exercises will be based from a source, then not being willing to explain this further just sounds like it will be troublesome just to find out what this really is about. I mean, I would understand if your post was already almost 4 paragraphs long (even thought I would rather like it if you wrote it, no matter how long the post gets).
In the end I think that the problem with your post was more about social skills. Maybe you should improve these along with game design for a while, because it will be needed to work properly in a team, and then try again.
Just think of social skills as a requirement you need to work with a team, and because of that, for game development. You can be the best game designer in the world, but if you cannot communicate with your team, your work won't be transmited to the rest of the team, and because of that, to their work, which is the game.
Not that I'm perfect, by now I must look like I'm typing this because I just love to point what I think that is wrong :p But do I think that it's great that you are serious about game design :)
Oh, and I'm not really interested. I do like game design a lot, but I have other things to do, so I can't assure you to always be there and cannot commit to it.

Alright, well I can not make an excuse for the grammar issues other than I am lazy when I post.
To clarify, the reason I am asking for three people at the moment. Has to do with refining the exercises. Its not really a team per say. Its a group of people who desire to really apply design concepts. I want to bring more people into it. But I would like to try with a smaller group before I move to a larger group. So I would like to make it very clear. I am not trying to exclude people. I want to see how a few people take to it first.
I do not want to control what everyone in the group does. I just want people who will complete a task that might be asked. Example: The design challenge this week might be to take A object B object C object and D object and make a game that has kinesthetic skill and probability. Create a document and set of rules to go along with it.
Because then the group would come together and read all the documents. Then discuss which ones they liked better and why. Also check to make sure their documents are clear enough to get the idea of the game across.
I personally think it would be more information than necessary for me to explain all the possible exercises the book has. So the people who are interested will get more information.
And I thank you so much for your comment about my social skills. I am glad that you are able to read into my social standing with my current post. I shall work on it more with my current design job.
Thank you very much on your insight about the post. I was tired when I came up with the idea and posted kind of rashly. I still wish do it if I can get some volunteers. Hopefully I have made some things come to light that were in the dark.

Although I'm not familiar with the book you're referring to, the whole idea sounds a bit like you're looking for people to prototype your game designs. This reminds me of the Experimental Gameplay Project, which is similar to what you describe in that four students each tried to create one game prototype per week. I'm sure you'll find that site interesting.
The difference here is that it sounds like you won't be doing prototypes yourself, only designs/idea's. Personally, I think that's not a very motivating attitude, as it's basically saying you want others to do the hard work for you. Perhaps that's not your intention and perhaps you do want to get things done yourself, but that's simply the impression I get so far.

First, I am not trying to get people to do work for me. It would be collaborative. I would be participating in the activities as well. The idea is to actually start applying design theory. This in no way is to make a team to make games. This in no way is a team to try to do work for me. This is a group that would be helping each other work on the skills necessary to be a successful designer.
I apologize if it came off any other way. But I assure you that I am not trying to swindle any one. You do not have to buy the book to do this either.
