Your Rig/Equipment
Hi everyone,
What does your setup consist of?
I just thought I'd throw this out to see what other people are working with. I'm a musician so I've had the opportunity to accumulate a little bit of equipment over the years for recording. Now, getting into game design, I'm getting excited to get some dual usage from it - more bang for my buck.
My Equipment:
2 pairs of studio reference headphones (Samson, Behringer)
1 pair of M-Audio BX8a studio reference speakers
A small Peavey 8 channel mixer
M-Audio Delta 44 soundcard w/4in4out Breakout Box
Bunch of mics (SM-57s, Samsom C03, etc...)
Software - Cakewalk Sonar 4
Various instruments (drums, guitar, keys, bass)
The thing I'm most excited about is recording video game music almost entirely with real instruments (minimal MIDI).
Anywho - let me know what you use and what you think of it. Music is a passion of mine and I'd enjoy hearing! :)
Cheap and cheerful setup for me, by musician standards:
M-Audio Audiophile Delta 2496 sound card
Samson CO1U condenser mic
Shure SM58 dynamic mic
E-Mu XBoard 49 keyboard
Cakewalk Sonar 4
FLStudio 6 Producer Edition
Sennheiser HD-25SP headphones
EWQLSO Silver Edition (orchestra VST)
Blue Jay Small Ambient Drums soundfont
2 electric guitars, 1 electro-acoustic, 1 bass guitar
Various guitar fx pedals
I'm happy with it all, but I'm not exactly a professional musician. I am looking for better drums though - hopefully without having to splash out for Battery - and perhaps some sort of mixer to reduce the amount of time I spend plugging things in.

Kylotan - How do you like your Orchestral VST? I use the Edirol Orchestral VST and find it to be incredibly fun to play with.
Kada2k6 - If you don't mind me asking, how much did your Lexicon unit cost you?
For fun and because listing off stuff in detail is oddly amusing, here's a list of the instrumental gear I use:
Guitars:
-Shecter C1 Classic (w/Gold Hardware)
-Alvarez Electric Acoustic (w/Built in Tuner)
-6 other less noteworthy guitars
Amps:
-Crate VFX5250 (2x12 Celestion speakers)
-Peavey VTM 120 Head
-Crate 4x12 Speaker Cabinet
-A couple less noteworthy practice amps
FX:
-Boss MT-2(MetalZone) Distortion Pedal
-Boss TU-2 Tuning Pedal
-Behringer V-Verb Pro Rack
-A partially working Korg A5 multieffects pedal
Drums:
-Crappy Network 5pc. drumset
-Sabian B8Pro Crash
-Zildjian ZBT Ride
-Zildjian ZHT Splash
-Zildjian ZXT HiHats
Keys:
-A couple basic Casio units w/MIDI out

Yeah, I figured it was probably carrying a hefty price tag. I've been eying a Lexicon MX400 rack that's going for about $707 (CAD) at the local music store. Although, I'd really like to run it against my 'Behringer V-Verb Pro' rack to see the difference. I mean, obviously Lexicon would be superior, but would it be worth paying twice as much for it?

I quite like it, though I am in no danger of making full use of even just this Silver edition, since I know very little about traditional orchestration. Mainly I just use it for overdubbing my death metal with cellos and choirs! :) A couple of the sounds aren't great (eg. I seem to recall that one of the violins sounds pretty fake at higher pitches - maybe to do with it being the Silver version) but the overwhelming majority sound very realistic to my ears. No idea whether it's fairly standard across most of these orchestral plugins, but it uses the lowest notes to switch between different articulations, which means effective improvisation with it is not always too practical with treble instruments on a 49-key keyboard. I'm not very good on the keyboard anyway so this isn't as big a problem for me as it might be to someone else.

That's awesome. I use my Edirol plugs for a similiar purpose - just a little filling up around the edges in my heavier metal-esque songs. Do you have any demos, if it's alright to ask?
Also, not to worry - I'm pretty far as well from entirely grasping my Edirol plug-ins. Generally I don't think I ever will seeing as how it's not neccessary if I'm only interested in using a few particular instruments.
