Network management system in railway simulation

Hello all, I am a great fan of railway networks simulations, having played too many nights on the old Railroad Tycoon, Transport Tycoon, A4 Network$, Simutrans and OpenTTD. I am now thinking about track and network management, and how this could lead to cool gameplay. The freedom of network creation in OpenTTD is truly amazing, and the layouts based on complex signaling allow quite realistic configurations. Creating tracks for even more busy lines with great profit while the cities grow is the main aim of the game, and makes it terribly addictive. On the other hand, it can be frustrating to lose time turning all these little signals in the right direction. On the other side, A4 Network$ (A-Train 4, I did not have the occasion of trying the others of the serie) had some good features (as well as many bugs), but the network management was based on times, and that was truly awful. The only way to get a profitable line was to create loops, and put as many trains as possible with just enough space between them so that one would not catch the next one at a station. Add a splitter somewhere, and the collision is almost assured! What do you guys see as a good network management? Is OpenTTD the paramount? Are there some less micro-management oriented solutions, but still retaining the cool feeling of setting up a huge station with many tracks crossing and decrossing, trains waiting to enter the station? I am missing any other train management game around here with another interesting network management system? Thanks for your input!
