Top 5 things in FPS

If you could add anything to any FPS, what are 5 things you'd add?

What do you mean? So that it isn't an FPS? Added to an existing FPS? Personally I would like a more flexible (1) and dynamic (2) world, where you make your own choices (whether to do it stealth, assault, etc.). We need to incorporate many elements from the RPGs IMO (Deus Ex tried this, but still lacked lots of elements, for example even though there could be small changes in the plot it was still very linear (you couldn't stay with UNATCO)). I know it isn't five things, but 5 things could be: better graphics, better physics, better AI, better gameplay and better sound. Or it could be smaller things like squad-based AI, RPG-style inventory, rocket launcher, vehicles and planes.

1) an entire world of an environment, as in the earth to scale.
2) use of any vehicle you want
3) 100% realistic physics, from bullet ricochets to accurately destructible environments
4) Every weapon known to man, plus new sci-fi creations introduced every month
5) Shake it, baby

  1. Gin
  2. Rum
  3. Triple Sec
  4. Lemon Juice
  5. Coca-Cola

What are your goals? Do you want something slow or reflexive, strategic or tactical, etc? Personally, I quite like Unreal Tournament 2004 as it is in various game modes.

TAM (Team Arena Master) is great for games with random people because of the way it reduces the starting health and shields of the winning team to make up for unbalanced teams, but it would be nice if the amount it reduced wasn't so large. I also like the round-based aspect and starting with all the weapons and ammo you can have becuse it lets you concentrate solely on using the weapons - being unable to obtain a weapon you can use is one of the most frustrating things in any fps. Some kind of handicap system would be better than changing a whole teams' starting health, and making the health differential based on score difference instead of absolute score would be a big improvement, but it's not too bad as an "equalizer" to make pubbing more fair.

On the other hand, TDM (Team Deathmatch) with weaponstay off and one continuous match obviously allows for more skill since it's possible to control parts of the level to keep certain weapons away from opponents. It's pretty fun in clan play, but it can be almost unplayable with random people since detailed cooperation is entirely neccessary (such as keeping track of item respawn timing and making sure to always have somebody there when shields spawn).
UT2k4 DM/TDM is one of the only games I've ever played where I've felt greatness in skilled players. Sure, it's nice to aim well in quake or something, but seeing somebody take full advantage of the movement capabilities in UT2k4 in addition to good timing, aim, weapon selection, level control, etc is just plain awesome.

To just have a good time, Assault can be nice if you can find a decent sever that isn't full of bots and has a decent number of human players, but it can be really ruined with all the low-quality maps that people like and imbalanced teams can make the game over quite quickly. Really, finding a decent server is one of the worth things about UT2k4 - because it isn't as popular as newer, flashier games, it can be difficult to find a place to play.

Or, if console games are your style, you can play the halo-esque mode Onslaught. Personally, I find it pretty boring. I can see where it might be fun if you could find enough people to play a 10v10 clan match or something like that, but I still don't like the way the huge distances nullify the importance of personal movement abilities and instead moves the focus to vehicles.

3spn is trying to fix that, and it's system was quite nice last time I played there, but it's servers were all EXTREMELY laggy even after they significantly improved them.

I have my own UT2k4 server from GameServers for a great price, and it's nice except that finding people to play at random times is difficult. Hopefully once the semester ends and my friends and I are able to play more often, we'll be able to find a decent supply of opponents.

-More Physics. Every object should be more componentized - like how the vehicles in ETQW are supposed to be...

-Destructable environments. Like Red Faction 2 but more so, given higher specs. See John Woo's Stranglehold.

-Cooperative play. Singleplayer is multiplayer, just with a single client.

-More variations in player gameplay & interaction with the world - i.e., if you're a medic in a BF2 clone, your gameplay steals bits from Trauma Center or MGS3's system.

-Better AI (duh...), including the better and more interesting integration of innovative AI ideas in multiplayer (i.e, a large-scale FPS where each player controls a fire-team).

Multiplayer:

- Larger scale. I want battles between 200 people. Chaos! Bodies flying everywhere.

Single player:

-Better AI. Not as a more skilled opponent, just a more believable one.

1+1 = 5.
To sum up everyones ideas, I think I can say it best.

Such as the Windows' 'We share your pain' project? Sounds good to me... :)
