I''m looking to buy a book for OpenGL and game programming. has anyone got or read this book, I don''t know whether it''s too advanced or whether it concentrates on OpenGL or what. I want a good book that not only teaches the techniques of game programming and effects (which internet tutorials mainly are, teaching the effects) but the structure of game engines etc. Help is well appreciated. Thanks
Hi all

For a book on OpenGL I have found that the red and blue books are great. If you are going to use Delphi the Delphi book is also very good (i own all three).

For a book on game programming well there are many, Game Programming Gems is very very good, but the topics it does cover are in detail from 3-12 pages but it covers a large number of topics which have code were applicable on the CD, which is always nice. The Graphics is all coded in OpenGL. The Book is part of a series of books and the second is currently being written. I for one will be adding number two to my collection as soon as it is available. The chapter on AI is worth the $70 alone.

I would definitely recommend these books, go take a look on amazon and see what other owners say! Also take a look at www.flipcode.com at the top of the page there is a link to a text about, what books games programmers from some quite famous companies recommend.

Hope That Helps 3DG

Game Programming Gems does NOT teach OpenGL. So if you need a book to teach you OpenGL, you could try the books the other guy posted or the book i really like which is "The OpenGL Superbible: 2nd ed." Game Programming Gems uses OpenGL yes, but that book only shows you techniques used in 3d games, not HOW to use a specific API. I have Game Programming Gems and its a great book, but not the book you need to learn a 3d API. Also when ever you decide to buy Game Programming Gems one day (if you do), make sure and brush up on your calculus, you''ll need it.

I seen some reviews of different books. One that caught my eye was 3D Engine Programming which teaches what is at the core of 3D games, and I thought that it would be good to understand what exactly what was going on because I would have thought to become relitivly professional with Game engines you would need to know this. Although the view on how much maths is required varies. Some said it was impossible and some said not. With respect to me I got my GCSE Maths and Add maths exams and am doing an A-Level in maths but I don''t know if this is enough to make sense of this book. Really, if I had the money I''d like the
3D Engines book, the Game Programming Gems book, an OpenGL specific book and a Windows Programming book to brush up on W32 code. But some of these books are real expensive and I only got £25 in my wallet! Can someone please send some money this way.
