Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, so apologies in advance! I am looking for freelance artists to do some 2d game sprites, but I have no clue what is the market rate, and how much to pay the artist. Do I base it on the number of sprites drawn? Frames per animations? And what is a standard market rate (if there is any?) Any data or anecdotes to share? Thanks in advance!

Depends on experience. I'm going to be looking for 2D graphics artists myself. Since GDNet lacks a formal 'marketplace' forum, the closest I've found are IndieGamer's, which run along similar lines to my proposal to GDNet's management.

You'll need to contact each artist individually, but do bear in mind that freelancers will usually charge more than you'd be paying for an in-house employee. The advantage is that you only pay them while you need their services. Once he's done his work, he moves onto another client and you stop paying.

Check out portfolios first, since you'll want the artist's style to fit your game's vision. Draw up a shortlist and contact them by email. Make sure you're able to give them _precise_ details about what you need from them. They won't be able to give you a solid quote if you can't give them a solid brief.

And finally, get quotes from at least three different candidates. Make sure you get an idea of their track record too: a brilliant artist who sucks at sticking to deadlines may not be what you're after.
