The free way to use JPEG

Although the JPEG patent has been pretty much invalidated with little hope of rescue, Forgent has reminded us that many of the claims in the patent are still left standing, and they intend to enforce them. Now this patent has expired as of October 6, 2006. Now, to be certain that you cannot be sued for future profits based upon past infringement, you can reconvert your JPEGs back to bitmap and then right back to JPEG again. Even if it results in mostly the same data bits, you can claim under oath that you are distributing images encoded after the October 2006 expiration date. (You can use a batch file to do that overnight). Now if you want to use your cybershot still photots, Sony already paid off Forgent so that's ok already; but MPEG4 movies it takes; that's a whole other story. I would recommend reconverting those to VP3. You can make sure that your software looks inside the file first and refuses any FourCC other than "VP31".
