Just a though... many ppl are on 56 connections... me for instance and dling 100mgs for something i bough is hard...
also, someone said if u give them reg option someone can hack to it and make it full with a crack... hey, after ONE purchase is made, u can make 100000000 copies of it and send to whoever !!

Yeah, whats to stop people from giving it to friends, or even uploading it to their own website for people to download after they have purchased the game?
When my game is released, I plan on making it free for download from a website (maybe mail-order CDs later on, but as a new developer, online downloads are my best bet), and then possibly sell initial activation fees, plus pay-per-month access (since the program is an online roleplaying game). Anyone can download and own the game, but you must pay for an active account (and its maintenance). So there''s no real way to hack the game, because the game isn''t crippled, and there''s no way to pirate the game, because the game is free.
I guess managing download and maintenance costs through monthly fees and activation fees are the key item here, since I don''t really plan on distributing physical media. And the important data is stored on the server-side.
Ideas? Comments?

MatrixCubed''s idea is a classic client-server setup. Virtually hack-free (in regards to people playing for free) for the reasons he specifies.
If you go a more traditional shareware route, you''ll never be 100% "secure".
But you don''t have to be.
All you need to do is "raise the bar" on cracking your software to the point where your average user can''t do it. There are plenty of resources on the web for accomplishing this. Do your research, you''ll find one that suits your needs.
Fact is, though, that unless you have an application that sees widespread use (like MS Word) and/or is priced fairly high (like most retail computer games or 3DStudio Max), you''ll probably be ignored by "warez hackers" the world over.
On top of that, unless you designed with hackers and warez site visitors as your target audience, most of your downloads are going to be by interested "civilians" who''ve never come within 100 clicks of a warez site. And chances are, your feeble attempts at fending off the minority of idiots will (a) not stop said idiots and (b) will likely annoy potentially paying customers to the point of simply uninstalling.
Don''t ignore the potential for losing sales to hackers. Protect yourself, certainly. But don''t waste too much time worrying about them and trying to stop them. They weren''t going to buy a copy anyway...
