Cooperative, not competetive games

One thing I've seen much less of in the last few years (with the exception of MMO's) is multiplayer games that have true cooperative modes instead of competetive modes. Now adays it seems that if there is a Multiplayer portion of a game (expecially action) its as a PVP mode. Rarely do you see Multiplayer Cooperative as part of the design of the game. The last game I've played that had a mode was "From Russia With Love" and the "Guantlet" Games. I've not played any of the Full Spectrum Warrior or Rainbow Six games. I've seen them played and they look like they would lend themselves perfectly to CoOp. (I'm not sure if they have one or not) I liked playing games like contra and such that were fun. What about you guys

Lots of Rainbow 6 games are played with all the PCs on one team taking out NPC terrorists.

Even most PvP games are part co-op. WoW, Americas Army, and Battlefield 2, to name a few, all have serious teamwork components. They also pit you against other players.

Speaking of WoW, questing and raiding are serious co-op play (as you pointed out).

Halo allows for co-op and team pvp.

So, I think plenty of games do have co-op modes, and there are also plenty of PVP multiplayer games.

I agree with you. Coop is 10X as fun as deathmatch mode. Descent coop was fun as hell-- Serious Sam, too.

Coop brings so much to games! Please heed us, developers!
At least Rainbow Six: Raven Shield (the best in the series IMO) had coop mode where you could play single player missions with friends. We used to play it a lot back then, was a lot of fun.

Many console games have split-screen coop. Halo (2) and X-Men Legends (2) for example.

Many "smaller" games (as opposed to AAA titles) have a coop mode. Shadowgrounds (top-down shooter with nice 3D graphics) for example.

Titan Quest (a nice Diablo clone set in ancient times) has coop too, and actually doesn't even have competitive multiplayer AFAIK.

Coop games are out there, even though you might have to search for them a bit.

I agree. Coop multiplayer is amazing. The best experience I have had of this was in the game Quake II. The Single Player mode was, in my opinion, very enjoyable. And sometimes it's a pity when the game is completed, because it's done. When you played the game again, with a couple of friends by your side, the fun and excitement is recreated in a spectacular fashion. There's nothing like teaming up against the baddies! [smile]
Co-op and voicechat add a whole new dimension to games. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory has a coop mode that actually lets you do things like hoist your buddy up to an otherwise unreachable ledge or heave him bodily across an unspannable gap. It rules.
