software agents
im a cs student and have a choice of modules was wondering what software agents is about and is it useful for game programming, it has been recommended as a games module?
what other aspects can it be used for?
The name 'software agents' sounds very broad and could be meaning a lot of different things, take a closer look over the module definition provided by your uni/college and see what they say about. My first guess since it's gaming related would be it's something along the lines of agent-based AI, which could be reused anywhere there's a need for individual AI 'entities'. AFAIK there's not many fields that use them outside of gaming and probably robotics, for the time being at least.
"Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.".....V
Its very broad, yes, but definetly useful for game AI. Check out what topics are actually included in the curriculum of this "module".
I took a course on Agent Based Systems last year. It bored me to tears, although I'm not sure whether that's the teacher or the subject matter itself. We covered topics like agency, multiagent interactions, arguments, multiagent learning and modal logics for multiagent systems.
There wasn't really a whole lot in the course that could apply to games specifically. Most of it was aimed at stuff like bidding in automated auctions and stuff like OASIS at Sydney airport.
