Okay, I installed the latest release of Ubuntu linux onto this Hitachi computer I just aquired for my wife. Everything installed without any difficulty except one thing - it won't connect to the internet! That picture is what I got when I typed in ifconfig into a terminal window. I went into Administration -> Networking -> Connections and eth0 is set to Active and under properties it is set to use DHCP. I also went into Administration -> Network Tools -> Devices and it shows eth0 and lo. I'm at a loss at to what to look at/do next. I'm not particularly linux savvy.

Moving to Everything Unix.

You don't seem to have an IPv4 address: I suspect you should try bringing the network interface up with "ifconfig eth0 up" and see what happens.

Rock on man, that worked. Thanks!

What exactly did the command do?

It activates the eth0 interface :-) See the ifconfig manpage. Does it do this everytime you reboot?

PS: a deacticate/activate cycle in the network GUI manager should result in the same result.
