Just saying Hi (and a bit of music)

Hi all! My name is Pelthar, and I'll be 29 this year. Why is that important? Well, I've been told several times that I have musical talent, but I never really used it, so if there's any talent at all, it was pretty much wasted so far. I've been reading this forum for the past 2 months, and all the great stuff posted by composers, inspired me to finally start my own musical journey. That is the short version of my story, and if you want my advice, just rest your eyes and use your ears for a while, skip to the music links, listen to them, and if you're still interested, then welcome back for the longer version! :) There are quite a few obstacles in my way, so I have a lot of work to do. First of all, I know virtually nothing about music theory at the moment, but I'm determined to change that, as in my opinion music theory is a tool, that could help composing easier, faster and it'd also help to create more polished pieces. Another problem is that I can't play any instruments, and I don't even have one at the moment, except my own voice. Luckily, I can sing pretty well by ear (or at least I do according to my girlfriend) :), and it helps a lot. I can at least sing the tunes I want to write down in a notation software, but I can't really use my voice as a Midi instrument, can I? So I guess I'll need to get a keyboard as soon as possible. I started to work with Fruity Loops about 5-6 weeks ago, but I only got a bunch of quality soundfonts last week, so I started everything all over again. At least finally I'm satisfied with the sound quality (although there's always room for improvement). Now, it's time to show my work to the public for the first time. I would appreciate all kinds of comments. The first piece is a short one, as I was looking for something that is loopable and would also fit in a videogame. It's a dynamic, buoyant piece, or it should be. :) Hunted.mp3 - 0:57 The next one is not finished yet, I have a few mastering problems mainly, but i think it's worth showing, and I didn't want to present only 1 minute of music altogether. This piece is slow and emotional, but I didn't want to create a monumental, epic melody, I went for the "lone adventurer-feeling" instead. :) Here it comes: Don't Look Back.mp3 - 2:20 My Soundclick folder will be updated soon with more songs, so if you're interested, you can find me here: My Soundclick profile and library Once again, all kinds of criticism would help. Thx for listening, and best regards, Pelthar EDIT: Fixed the links, hopefully these are working now. [Edited by - Pelthar on August 23, 2006 8:45:58 AM]
Pelthar you should have a webhost to put your music, instead of using SoundClick. Almost no one will ever register there just to listen to you, unfortunately :(

Honestly I didn't even know that one has to registrate himself to be able to listen these pieces, but someone else helped me, so I will probably be able to fix those links in a few minutes.

On the other hand, you're right, I shouldn't use Soundclick. Still, I want to improve my technique in music as quick as possible, and whenever I reached the level I'm looking for, I will immediately switch to a personal webpage. At the moment I'm only looking for verification of my talent (if there's any), and save the "promotional fireworks" for latter times and better music. :)
Hmm, not much of an interest, here. :( I'll give it one more try, and present you my latest work, probably my best so far. I hope for some activity and feedback this time. :)

So, here's the link:

My Soundclick page URL (with more music) can be found here:

Hello I finally head your work.

Ok here is what I found out that could improve the music.

1 - The violin sound quality in the beggining is very poor.

2 - The percussion is good.

3 - The music is in F minor right? But right after when the second voice comes in it plays an A natural suggesting F major. This creates a major composition error and a bad sound overall.

4 - When the flute comes in it suggest it is in a Dorian F after all (which is ok) but then when it plays the highest note, again, an A natural sounds with a harmonic background in F minor (Ab).

5 - The music seems to be a continuous loop of some parts which becomes repetitive and not very interesting.

I am sorry to point you so many errors, but I am trying to be honest.

I would recomend you to have some composition classes, read some books before attempting to compose for an orchestra. Its obvious that you have some musical ear but it is still very untrained.

To compose for an orchestra your ear should be trained to the point that you can right down a full 4 part choral from Bach from a CD and identify exactly all harmonies being played.

I would also advise you to try to compose to smaller ensembles, like a trio of piano, Drums and bass, etc.

Start Simple then increase difficulty.

I am sorry if I sound harsh, but I am always honest to everyone.
