Need help for some video game sales figures
Hello! Is there a site out there that compiles the number of games sold per each gaming platform (pc, consoles, handheld, web games, etc) for the last two years and probably early 2006? I'm quite interested at looking at such numerical data, ie what platform had the most games sold, and such. So far, I've looked at ESA's "2005 Essential Facts About the Computer ad Video Game Industry" but they've only discussed the video games generally, not per each platform, and I think their data is primarily from North America. It would be lovely if there are info about Japan too.
Also, can anyone also point me to sites that discuss how the next generation consoles are currently attracting game publishers? I have been told that these publishers allocate a part of their budget, which is to be given to the developers, for each selected gaming platform. Are there data on the net which shows these? For example, how does EA divide their budget? Probably 20% for Xbox360 developers, 20% PS3, 20% Wii, 25% PC, 15% others? Something like that.
Thanks, and hugs for anyone who can provide information.

Accurate and up-to-date sales information comes at a cost. You can look up NPD TechWorld (www.techworld.com / www.npdfunworld.com), DFC Intelligence (www.dfcint.com), and Juniper Research (www.marketresearch.com, for cellphone games) for a start.
It costs thousands of dollars to get access to sales data, because it costs a lot to collect/compile.
As for publishers - their future plans are considered confidential information. Some projects will already have been announced but others will be secret. Also they don't publish the budgets for the various games so you can't calculate what % of their total budget they are spending on a game/platform.

Neo,
You can subscribe to free industry newsletters and get some information that way. GamaDaily (gamasutra.com) and GameBizDaily are two really good sources. It'll take you a lot of time to find useful figures, but that's how we get them...

You can get a lot of interesting information from their financial statements and quarterly reports ( like this ), but you're not going to get access to strategic information.
Gamesindustry.biz does a good Chart Recap, as well as a monthly analysis . To get better data than that, you'll need to start paying, for example from these guys .

Now this is a friendly forum. I only get thanks from the Beginners area :)
- Sorry, couldn't resist.
The best place I know of to go to is the NPD group. They make charts annually and quarterly of the top ten selling games under their press releases. They do not give away how many were sold but it does give some insight to the trends. http://www.npdfunworld.com/
Also like Odin mentioned Gamesindustry.biz is good too.
