Gentoo error everytine I try to install
Hey,
This gentoo is driving me insane. I can't seem to install it.
It sits there all night and I come back the next morning and it
says ERROR unable to download blah blah blah. I chose Dynamic and
that GRP install or whatever so it would NOT donwload anything.
It says in the help file choose that if you do NOT have an internet
connection. So I did and it still it trying to download somthing.
I selected the vanillia-sources if that helps rather then in livecd
kernel. Thanks.
Ok... Have you gone to the Gentoo forums? They are actually very good.

Gentoo is probably a poor choice if you aren't prepared to download things and solve problems all the time.
are you using -k in your emerge flags? that will use the binary if it's in your distfiles directory. The gentoo forums/docs are a great resource. I'd look up your specific problem there.

It isn't click 'n go, if that's what you mean, but if you know what you're doing and/or are willing to learn, it has a level of customization readily available in no other distro and a package management system without peer (IMHO).
Now, with regards to the original question:

A Gentoo install roughly follows this sequence (check the Gentoo handbook for details):
1. Set up the network, if you are doing a network install.
2. Format/partition the hard drives.
3. Decompress the stage files.
4. Decompress the portage snapshot.
5. Sync the portage tree (optional; you don't have to do this before proceeding, but if you are going to want to keep the system up to date, you'll need to).
6. If you are going to use GRP, do it here.
Assuming the previous steps are done:
Insert the GRP CD, then:
export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom"emerge -k [packagename]
As the previous poster said. As I understand it, this should work. However, I have never installed the binary GRP packages on Gentoo.
I also third that the Gentoo forums and wiki are excellent.
