Original post by Daniel Miller I disagree that large corporations 'rule' American culture. The companies that make what consumers want grow. Those large coporations are in that position because customers buy what they have to offer. It's not a matter of being spoon-fed.
Don't forget that the large corporations also tend to have much larger marketing budgets. [wink]
When I actually go back and play a lot of old school SNES or NES games I see that a lot of games were just 2D platformer clones. When I read your list, instead of seeing 3 original games (mario, toejam and earl, earthworm jim). I just see platformer, platformer, platformer. Instead of making a lot of MMORPG or FPS, a lot of platformers were made. Sure some were pretty fun and some improved on the core concept, but many were just crap. It's the same now. There's a few gems among many failures. To me, that just seems like a normal thing for entertainment in general, not just video games.
Original post by badbrain They have xhaustively raped(sodomized) the concept of orcs, elves, gnomes, and talking trees. The same goes for the american comic book characters.
Large corperations rule American culture for now. So it's a bit stale. But not forever. We'll slowly get it back. Those buildings can only stand so tall before they just fall over on their own.
The kids who were playing pacman at shiny green arcades and growing up watching Back to the Future like a beautiful broken record are just now reaching the ages of 25-30. I keep expecting something drastic to happen soon.

Now i disagree with your disagree. No place on earth is so controllt by the big companys and media like the USA. I was in the USA. The most people know absolut nothing and they want nothing until a TV spot or the yello press tells them what they want and what they need. Nice place to send hollyday - terrible place to live. I have good friends in the USA but on the other side i never saw more brainwashed media zombies like there.
The first, most practical step, to making games better is improving the storylines/dialogue -- the film/book-like qualities of games.
It's like half-life 2: Great story (for a game) but been there before gameplay (but admittedly the best its ever been done.) There's only so many ways you can do "shooting at things".
Orginality isn't necessarily what is needed it's coming up with lots of excellent ideas that so obviously is.
Original post by MSW oh good gawd! Get over yourselves! deal with it. Period, end of story, game over.
Damn dude. I don't really think anyone here boasted about the games of today being anything but repetitive. Maybe you were browsing one thread and replied to another? I was the only one who commented that todays games are just as innovative as they ever were. Nothing has been lost, but a lot has been done. Coming up with a new idea for a video game now will be a hell of a lot harder than it was back in the day.
read the thread top to bottom dude. So much of it has gotten sidelined with obtuse arguments of "evil" corporations, brainwashed masses buying what media spoon feeds it, future games where players can be brain dead when they unplug, the theoretical singularly point of technological innovation, and even the originality and innovation of films like the Matrix.
SO...maybe now it becomes clear when I say to get over yourselves, see past the end of your stubby little noses.

Those are just 5 off the top of my head. There are many new and unique game ideas floating around, more-so now then in the 'old-school' days. Not only are there many more genre's available now, and there are many more titles being created for these genre's (except maybe platformer's). Also there are many new genre hybrids (RTS-FPS), (FPS-PRG), (RPG-RTS), which aren't completely unique but different enough to warrent their own category. And if thats not enough for you, there's always the indie games, such as Armadillo Run, or Powerball (I think its called that) which have been featured here in the IOTD. Though I gotta admit, I still like lemmings.
Original post by Ryan_001 Powerball (I think its called that)
It's now called Switchball. Though, I don't see how inovative that is; it's basically just Marble Madness with really nice physics, amazing graphics, and a fine level of polish.

It may have the same concept as marble madness, but the execution is completely different. The addition of a proper physics engine, combined with the focus on puzzle solving puts it in a whole different catagory. Marble madness was just a fast paced maze game. Switchball, though it features marbles/balls, is a completely different game to play. I mean thats like comparing Wolfenstien 3D to Counter Strike. Sure u run around and fire a weapon, but a squad based tactical shooter is a significantly different game than a run-n-gun.
We've all heard this plentiful complaints about originality before. If so many people truly want more creativity so bad, WHY are the companies not seeing what we want, and selling it to us at a hefty price?
Could it be that only the creative minds in the game development forums want more, but the majority of mainstream gamers just don't care as long as it's cool looking with the tried and true; boobs 'n' blood?
The last time I tried making an original game, Sandwichtron (the simulator of high-intensity sandwich manufacture and delivery) I was arrested in Vegas on drugs and weapon charges when attempting to research my game.
Hold a vigil for me, true believers! I am your original game producing god!
