I have dialup and I like to use my win xp as a server and Linux box as a client, I have the hardware, how do I configure it?

equipment: you'll need either a hub or a crossover cable to connect the XP machine and the Linux box (a standard ethernet cable will _not_ work to connect 2 computers directly)

modem -> XP box -> linux box

each -> represents a connection.

on the XP box:

right click Network Connections -> properties
right click your ethernet connection entry -> properties
Advanced tab
Check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection"

I believe that's it... dunno. At that point your ethernet connection on your XP box should be operating a DHCP server to which your linux box can connect. You may have to monkey around further in XP to get the DHCP deal working. I can't test it here at work. =(

Some routers (such as original Apple Airport) also have modem jacks for dial-up.

actually almost all newer NICs doesn't need crossover-cables, they have automatic crossover
detection, and will do the cross internaly.
