I'm looking around for a high quality SFX library. I know these can get expensive- but with all of the work I'm doing now- it would be a wise investment. I know there are plenty of free SFX out there on the web, but the problem is I have to know 100% that these files are royalty free and that I can use them freely in commercial products without fear of violating any copyrights. Having said all of that- those of you out there that use such libraries- what do you recommend? I'm looking for a library that is very thorough. Thanks! Nathan www.madsenstudios.com

I've been blessed with the ability (and gear) to create my own from scratch so I don't spend much anymore on SFX. I do have a lot of Hollywood Edge and it's great for things that are harder to reproduce like explosions and guns. But if you get in the habit of recording everything around you every chance you get and cataloguing it all you'll be surprised how useable it all is.

It does get kind of addicting though, you start thinking, man I wish I could get up that tree and record that bird closer. Or I wish that guy would start that car again!

Also, I think this was mentioned in a recent thread, but all the sounds on Free Sound Project are in fact...free. You can get some really specific sounds on there (or find someone who will make them for ya) if you look around enough.

It's not a case of just using what you want willy nilly. The freesound license requires you to give credit to the original author of the sound, and if you use their sounds in a commercial product you must alter the sounds or only make partial use of them.

You also might want to try www.sounddogs.com.

Their database covers most all of the available production libraries as well as custome recorded sfx. The cost is per sound or bulk per batch.

I would also invest in recording gear so you can get your own custom sfx that no one else has ... separating your soundtrack apart from everyone else's.

I used Sound Dogs for the first time this morning (gotta love the last minute E3 fun that comes at this time of year) - it was nice to see that the cost of the sound you purchase is based upon length (with a minimum charge of course). I didn't need half the sound I was interested in, so I just selected the part I wanted and saved a few bucks. Good system...
