Would you play a Three Dimmensional Cartoon-style Racing Game similar to Mario Carts? I am currently devising a game idea based around cartoon style battle racing, and was wondering if you could answer these question and provide feedback. 1 Are these games fun? 1.1 Why or Why not? 2. Would you play without multiplayer? 2.2 Why or Why not? 2.3 Would a small indie game have a big enough player base to have more than ten players online at a time? 2.4 Would you, as a player, play mutliplayer regularly, even though there would be roughly nine maps? 3. What new features would you add to this kind of game? 3.1 Why? 3.2 How would these be implimented 4. Anything else to add? Thank you for your time and feedback. Tettamanti

1 Are these games fun? - Depends
1.1 Why or Why not? - Well, some people prefer hardcore - realistic - in your face games. I personally don't, but their alright. Anyhow, -I- think it would be nice, since I liked Mario Kart in the first place, but also I like the Cartoony feel that anything can happen beyond the world of physics... after all, I need to escape reality, not play it :P.

2. Would you play without multiplayer? - Yes
2.2 Why or Why not? - "dus n00b sp3ak du it 4 u?"
2.3 Would a small indie game have a big enough player base to have more than ten players online at a time? - Depends on popularity, advertising, etc. Get it out there and make it fun, and it should have a decent fan base.
2.4 Would you, as a player, play mutliplayer regularly, even though there would be roughly nine maps? - Only if they were offline, and had fun gameplay (Mario Kart!)

3. What new features would you add to this kind of game? - Well Mario Kart featured weapons, which was cool, something new could be "Kart" upgrades maybe?
3.1 Why? - I wouldn't really change the idea of Mario Kart (just using it as an example), since the more things you add, the more complex and unfriendly it feels.
3.2 How would these be implimented - Simply add a few new weapons and I'll play.

Given the popularity of the Mario Kart series, I'd say that was an obvious "Yes."

1 Are these games fun?

The graphic style of a game is perhaps the least influential on whether it's fun. Auto Modellista was a cel-shaded 3D arcade racing game, but it was universally panned and bombed at retail.

2. Would you play without multiplayer?

No. Even though I might spend most of the time playing alone against the CPU, learning the tracks and mastering the controls, multiplayer is essential for when friends come over, and online multiplayer is essential to extend the lifespan of the game after one has completed everything local and unlocked all cars, tracks, paintjobs, garages, etc...

2.3 Would a small indie game have a big enough player base to have more than ten players online at a time?

It's really a question of quality. Taking a look at Racer's rabid popularity with some gamers, I'm sure that the addition of online play would result in a ton of people playing regularly. Even in the absence of online play they create car models, paintjobs and rendered movies.

2.4 Would you, as a player, play mutliplayer regularly, even though there would be roughly nine maps?

No. I'm just not that big on online multiplayer. I had Xbox Live for over a year and I think I played online a total of 7 or 8 times, mostly in Project Gotham Racing 2.
1 Are these games fun?
Haven't played that many but the ones i have; Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, etc were fun!

1.1 Why or Why not?
I like them because of the vehicle handling simplicity, fun & playful vibe, weapons... lots of weapons and not just your basic ones but more wacky and inventive weapons that were really distinct from each other. Diddy Kong Racing let you choose between land-based, hover and air-based vehicles, that was another feature i liked.

2. Would you play without multiplayer?
Yep.

2.2 Why or Why not?
Provided the NPCs were challenging enough and made me forget i wasn't playing against a computer then i wouldn't mind no multiplayer. Multiplayer is a plus though so if you can do it -> do it!

2.3 Would a small indie game have a big enough player base to have more than ten players online at a time?
Sure if the game was good enough, but i guess that's all down to you now isn't it. ;)

2.4 Would you, as a player, play mutliplayer regularly, even though there would be roughly nine maps?
Define regularly? I would try it out once in a while if it was that good but i also got other things to do, places to go, games to play/make.

3. What new features would you add to this kind of game?
Ability to customize your driver and Kart (inner workings and looks). Don't go overboard or into too much detail like NFS:U for example, keep it fun and simple so you don't need a degree is car mechanics to understand it. Personalization is key. Go wild with weapons. Make sure you also put a battle mode like Mario Kart where you just fight each other rather than race, similar to vigilante 8.

3.1 Why?
Variety? Isolation from other similar games? Replayability?

3.2 How would these be implimented
That's your job, i'm just the brainstormer. :)

4. Anything else to add?
Good Luck!
