Video games and Graphic Design
I'm currently about half way through getting my degree for Graphic Design. This is a general graphic design course and doesnt address much in the way of video games. But I've been a hardcore gamer all my life, and would love to get involved in the industry somehow. Thought I'd ask for some advice as to where to start. I have an internship comming up in a couple months, so maybe even something like that would outstanding. Thanks everyone.
Learn how to 3d model, for starters. That will be the deal maker to decide whether or not you want to do art for games. Otherwise, consider doing concept art if your drawing skills are top-notch.

There also may or may not be positions available for UI design depending on the company. Some companies will actually use graphic designers for that, others will use their concept artists to come up with the design and have other people actually create the images.

What about the design of things like boxart, or instruction manuals.
Yeah I'm not sure. I think that's all done internal to either the marketing department or the publishing dept. That part of the "game-making" process is pretty opaque to me.

that is probably the best advice - if you have a substantial amount of money, then get a top-notch 3d package like lightwave or 3ds max, or if you don't have a whole lot you could try gmax, milkshape, or wings3d, all of which are free. for 2d art, photoshop and painter (corel) are the way to go; but if you don't have the money, settle for gimp and creature house expression 3 (available from microsoft, i think).
You're looking at a wanna-be right now :P
