Geesh, are you serious? You lost a gig due to lack of PT knowledge?

Where can you learn about ProTools, short of, uh, buying a rig? Which I have no intention of doing, of course.
No joke. :) I was like...... ummmmm. ok? Then realized that they were just ignorant for making that required.

In my earlier days of scoring for smaller films...

Had to smile when I read this. Makes you sound like you're in your 40's doing big-budget features. [wink]

...I actually lost a gig because they said, do you know how to run a PT rig? And I said no, but I learn very quickly. And they replied with, you are not quite up to our qualifications.

When discussing composing for a game, I actually had an audio guy at a company once ask how well I know Vegas. When I said I rarely use it because I work on a Mac, he gave me pretty much the same reply! [looksaround]

It's kinda' like the people who say, "Oh you worked for [famous composer] on [famous film]? Well we don't want that sound, so you're probably not the right person for us." (Yes, I was actually told that by somebody from a big game developer at a cocktail party.)
When I was younger. :) You are right. I sometimes forget how old I am !!!. About 4 years ago when I was doing lower budget indie films....

That is probably much better :)

Anymore, having a name is almost as important as knowing the craft and its tools.

Interesting post, but I agree with Sean Besson on this one. There are so many great programs out there, and everyone composes in a different manner.

Here is what I use:

Sonar Studio 4 (mainly for the audio side)
Reason 3 (great program and easy to edit)
East West Symphonic Orchestra (awesome orchestral sounds)
I rarely use Acid Pro 4- but have it there if needed.
Sound Forge 8 (great audio effects and use it to make patch samples that will loop- this is vital when writing for a cart. game like on the Nintendo DS)
Finale 2006 (used mainly for its notation abilities. Of all of my current programs, its the best for that)
Shure PG-57 Mic

I'm always looking to upgrade my studio and really want to get EW Colossus and EW Choirs. Those things seem incredible!
