Basically, you want to texture your model? I think this is what you're saying, but I'm not sure...

gsgraham.comSo, no, zebras are not causing hurricanes.
No i don't want to texture it it's such a simple thing that i want to put on it that it seems silly to texture it. Also i need to get the marks to gradually come off which i wont be able to do with texturing.

Are these 'marks' 3D or 2D? Does it not matter? Could you perhaps tell us *why* you need these? It might help us get a better understanding about what you're trying to do.
Still not sure what you want to do. If you want to draw lines on her 'skin,' you need to create a texture, plain and simple. If you want to 'annotate,' you can create and name null objects (such as 'sword goes here'), and child them to the main mesh. I know in Maya there's an actual 'Annotation' command, not sure about max, though I guess you can check it in the index.

bumpmaping might help but many ways can solve your problem try displacement or bumpmaping
the thing you are trying to do is skinning ( where you textures, maps, and shaders to detail an object)

if these marks are 3d then make a high poly character and then make the bumps on it and then use some app to amke a normal map.
Firstly thanks for all your suggestions.
The actual project is creating an animmation for breast reconstruction surgery, the surgery means taking a part from the buttock and placing into the breast area. I need to take the right buttock and mark where the plastic surgeon would cut the skin. So i need to mark the mesh so i cut along these markings and pull that part of the mesh out. It would be helpful to mark the mesh as then i won't need to attach other objects to it.
If i use a texture then i'[d have to model this mesh on a particular person and have pictures of them before during and after surgery, which isn't very nice for the patient so ideally i can do it without. Also would the texture break when i made a cut and removed a section of the mesh???
again any help/suggestions are much appreciated.

first of all you should have explained all of this at the very beginning....
but anyway... i think a decal would work fine for your project, basically you can just make a texture that uses alpha and has the mark for the cut, then this decal can simply be put anywhere you want without having to switchout any models or textures.
