I had this weird dream last night, and during part of it, I was playing a game on the computer. The game was apparently A TURN BASED MMORPG. I was playing as some kind of spear-throwing viking, and I had a party of three characters. At one point I was programming the AI for one of them, and the other two I operated manually. I was out looking for deer to hunt, at one point, and then I was entering some kind of tunnel system/dungeon. My AI based character was named "Napolean" and he had a conquistidor-style hat and a musket. A "turn" ticked by every 10 seconds or so. Graphics were sprite-based isometric, with multiple levels of zoom. I don't really think this is a good idea, but it's been awhile since I've dreamt about playing a nonexistent game, and I thought this was strange enough that I'd post it.
So I guess the real idea was to provoke discussion:

Could a turn based MMO work?

Could player-programed (loosely using the word) NPC companions work?

No, probably not. Although I wouldn't mind playing one, it win't catch on the majority of the market though.

Yes. If you use basic enough options it could work surprisingly well, I would think.
I think that the simultaneous turn is the wave of the future. It's just gotta roll a little closer before anyone really rides it.
