Weapons should be the usual fare. What is missing in futuristic MMO's is the seamless transitions between 1st/3rd & vehicular/flight/space sim style gaming. If you think of how large the maps need to be to achieve this, then you will realize that anything in any of today's MMO's is way too small. Any futuristic MMO that wants to break apart from the usual needs to incorporate this. Seeing the video of the Spore demo makes something like this promising in the near future.

Besides, when it comes to weapons game wise how much difference is there between a near instantaneous Laser gun, and a machine gun that shoots bullets at 200 miles an hour? Especially if you are within 50-100 yards of each other.
Depending on the bullet it's closer to 2000 miles and hour (sound barrier is 700+), and at extreme ranges bullets are actually visible; adjustments must be made for gravity(as in sniping).
Now after nitpicking for no good reason, I'd like to suggest an X-ray laser.
They're like near-visible spectrum lasers but use X-rays, which have way more energy per photon(?) or whatever particle-wave thingy. Might want to check my science, but the result is this(I think): A laser that can basically cut through anything, but requires an enormous amount of energy.
Could be a super weapon- imagine cutting a tank in half instantly. Actually sounds
a little too cool now...
