I would want a futuristic world. ;)
In all seriousness, I think that Tabula Rasa is going in the right directions as far as setting/weapons are concerned.

in a futuristic MMO?
space travel would be big. I envision battlestar-galactica type dogfights, pseudo-science and physics, believeable, but still fun. No laser guns, lasers would make combat incredibly less fun as they travel at the speed of light.
EVE has some of the right elements, if not all of them.

if no lasers then what kind of guns? if it is in the future should they have like guns from now but upgraded. and what kind of aliens would you like to see
How far future are we talking here? Star Trek does pretty well with making up words that sound like science to describe magic. I myself favor the Heinlein/Starcraft future, with machineguns and dirty spaceships and angry people with realistic problems like logistics and irrational girlfriends. Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie) is probably my favorite sci-fi depiction.
Check out Arthur C. Clark's The City and the Stars If you create a game that takes place AFTER the end of the book, I think you have a great setting..open to whatever you wanted to do.
Besides, when it comes to weapons game wise how much difference is there between a near instantaneous Laser gun, and a machine gun that shoots bullets at 200 miles an hour? Especially if you are within 50-100 yards of each other.

Ideas presented here are free. They are presented for the community to use how they see fit. All I ask is just a thanks if they should be used.
I was sorta going for a Battlestar galactica (the new series) type feel. Again, not too much realistic stuff, but believable. For example the fights between capital ships: missles and tons of ammo being expended for point defense against fighters.
Besides lasers are a lame special effect. They're not even visisble unless they scatter against something on the way to the target. Edit: that and lasers have been done to death.
I would also agree that if one goes far enough into the future you could use star-trek pseudo-science and no one would challenge you because they wouldn't know what the words mean.
Now, plasma weapons, there's a thought... That would be pretty neat...
As for aliens, anything but the "just like us but with pointy ears."
Please.
How about species with superior mental abilities, to the point where they can use their will to alter the physical world? Computers that have evolved the point of sentience, or perhaps a race that has evolved beyond the need for flesh, to become machine? (concept described in both the Space Odyssey, and "A meeting with medusa", both by arthur c. clarke)

maybe everyone's got too caught up with the matrix "bullet dodging" stunt. It's impossible to dodge a laser, nor is it possible to dodge anything close to the speed of sound because your reflexes are just simply ... slow. So what's the difference if you have, not have lasers?
Space FPS games and Mech Warrior have lasers installed to them, but that doesn't mean you'll hit the target everytime either. Moving targets are hard to hit.
as for weapons I'd suggest Lasers really, and missiles (homing and non-homing), plasmas, gauss, bullet oriented machine guns, granades and granade launchers, stun guns, flash bangs or missiles, anti-missiles, heavy artillery & laser etc...
