what music-making software?

I was wondering what music making software I should use to make games with. There's Finale, but for the price, I don't know. Finale also makes a cheaper Allegro and Songwriter. Then again, there's also Cakewalk's Music Creator 3 and Kinetic. I don't know, but I'm probably going to lean towards Kinetic or Allegro. What do you think would be best for a beginner out of these programs? Also, if you have any other suggestions, please post them. Thanks!
There's a great sticky in this forum, Music Software, etc., that you should definitly take a look at for more ideas about what is out there. Actually there are quite a few, so click on the Music and Sound forum listing and get busy! Goodluck [smile]

While I wrote this in your previous thread, I don't mind typing it again [grin].

I use ModPlug Tracker for my music, since it's great if you are more interested in slightly retro "game-sounding" music like I am. It's also free. As a downside it is a tracker, so it works on a "piano roll" interface rather than staff notation. Once you get used to this I find it works quite well for tweaking a composition, but I still like to write out the basics of a tune on paper first. I don't know if the more commercial packages are easier to work with in this regard.

However, for using a tracker you will also need a good set of instrument samples in order to make decent music. At the moment I make samples by recording notes from my keyboard and tweaking them with Audacity (also free). This works well for my needs, but mightn't be suitable for whatever it is you want to do.

If you want to listen to some of my tracker music there's a few threads I started here last year with some of my beginner work. There's also the music in "Pierre and the Fish" (linked in my signature), which was written in Modplug Tracker.

Best of luck!
