opensource models
Okay, i'm trying to learn how to program. My question is, how do I make money by giving content away (code I've written myself). My thought is maybe hook up with an engine, try and do some work on it, give it away. But what kind of licenses should be used?

If the code is given away free the usual method of making money is to charge for support or for customisation services (altering the standard build to meet a specific customers needs).

It stinks, but in-game advertising does generate money.
And Obscure's comments are very true.
It doesn't work for games, but in Open Source software there is a ton of money to be made in software support. Big companies and various government groups frequently have requirements that corporate support must be available, or that a contract for support must be in place. It's a major source of revenue for many F/OSS companies.
Customization follows the same lines. It's cheaper to pay a contractor already familiar with the stuff than to have your own programmers get up to speed before making the changes.
