i've been going through hell trying to find a linux distribution that installs and works properly on my new pc. i'd use suse 10.0 but after a couple reboots(without any changes) my graphics get screwed up and i can't find a way to fix it. i tried ubuntu because i already have it on cd, but i get screwed graphics right from the install and can't fix it. i'm looking for a distribution that just installs and works without editing 500 config files and recompiling a kernel while balancing on one foot, patting my head, rubbing my stomach, and coding a hockey mmorpg in asm with my toes. pc specs: evga geforce 6800gs pci-e abit kn8 ultra amd athlon64 3200+ venice core 1gb (2x512mb) ddr400 2x seagate 80gb sata2 if anyone knows anything about the suse problem that would be even better than a new dist.

You could try Fedora Core 4. I use it, when I have the available time to actually boot it up. It's a decent version.
openSuSe x64 I run it as my main system on 3 pcs, love it.

i love suse too. the only real problem i have is the graphics break after a couple reboots. when kdm starts the screen is all scrambled. i haven't been able to find anything about this problem and i'd prefer to be able to use suse.

Are your graphics screwed under all OS's distro's? I mean, are you sure it's not a hardware problem?

I had some issues getting Ubuntu to work with my nvidia card. I had to boot into a failsafe terminal and manually edit the X config file to get it working (which if you shouldn't do unless you know what you're doing). Fedora Core 4 has worked great for me though.

As Sander pointed out, it's entirely possible you have a hardware problem.
as far as i can tell i have no hardware problems. everything is flawless in xp pro. it seems to be a driver or config problem.

i'm downloading the fedora core 4 dvd iso at the moment. i'll give it a test run in vmware then possibly install it.

does anyone else have a geforce 6800gs and use linux?

How about gentoo ? You can download prebuild binaries for a quick installation, then let the emerge tool recompile the system in the background/night.
