some more ideas:

In keeping with your alternate dimension theme, why not make the world follow different physical laws than our own dimension? Lets say in the other dimension, electric implulses have a drastic effect on the physical world such as your thoughts can directly materialize into tangible objects. They saw a jungle because they were all secretly hoping for a habitable world to be in. They were attacked by velociraptors because they were expecting danger and somebody associated the dark jungle with prehistoric earth and dinos. The caves could be a unconscious wish for a safe hiding place from the attacking velociraptors.

They might later find out how the dimension works and proceed from there. Maybe not all thoughts can be materialized only deep strong thoughts/emotions or Making a wish come true can have negative consequence such as erasing memory, draining life. Fears and nightmares can be realized easier and harder to control than the happy thoughts.

As another idea, make all the people on the team semi-loners or couples meaning they were picked to be on this team because they have nothing to go back to earth (the premise was it was a one way mission) so thinking of a way back to earth and using the new dimension's laws to create a wormhole won't work or some other explanation.

edit : with electricity/electromagnetic patterns having a great effect on other objects, lightning can rip atoms apart, programming a computer may cause explosions or even programs can act sentient. just make some other weird stuff

The reason the team encountered velociraptors is because those "velociraptors" looked like velociraptors. Those creatures that they encountered are native to that planet. It is a prehistoric planet, similar to earth, but not earth, just a new planet that is being formed. In this new planet, you won't only find "dinos", you will find many mysteries and scary things, such as spectres and other types of "mosters" not dinos. Think of these new dinos as what happened to Earth. According to theory, Earth's first lifeform came from a cell. What if those same patterns that happened on Earth are universal?

I really like the idea of "sentient" computers. They will definetaly be related to the story. Then it is set. The planet is moderated by sentient computers. These computers are deep under the planet's mantle and have an expanded network of cabling that run all over the planet. These cables are connected to machines on the surface that creates geological reactions. The purpose of this machines is to help speed up the new planet's transformation. Now the question is, who built these networks and why did the team ended up in such planet? My idea is that the team were told to reproduce on the new planet and be the planet's new dominant species. The new question is, is there a master plan behind this? A master mind? Who is it?
Yapposai you are so great. I love the "sentient computers" term. I will expand the story more on this.

A planet moderated by computers huh? Someone should do a movie about that...or three.

Why don't you make a dozen? I would appreciate it.

You mean the ultimate answer to their cheese tramp?

shouldn't this be "looking for the ultimate question to the ultimate answer?"

some more stuff to add to the mix, feel free to add elements you feel will help your story.

How about the planet actually is a giant trap, if you will. The planet/computer lures sentient civilizations to it in the hope of assimilating diffents species in the hope of improving itself. It sends out the proper signals, signs of a habitable planet to likely life-supporting systems. Let's say it sent an asteriod to earth a few hundred years ago as bait with enough information for a sufficiently advanced civilization to learn the planet's location.

The planet matches its evolutional state with the state the prey (in this case, humans) will likely be familiar or able to handle. It analyzes the species' reactions, techonology like studying mice in a maze. The goal is not so much biological experimentation but mental and how the species work as a team, something that the sentient planet (being alone and unique) have no experience.

Make the team find dozens of ruins of civilizations' exploration teams. If you like you could let them meet survivors of the other teams, if any.

by the way, what kind of game do you have in mind for this story? It seems RPG/ point and click adventure to me. Although a Jagged Alliance type of game could be cool.

Hi Yapposai,

Great insights. This is a little overview of the storyline:

1. An exploration team is sent to an uncharted planet through a dimensional portal for a one way venture with the purpose of establishing a colony on the planet.

What they find
A network of machines upon the surface which regulate the planet's weather and stimulate geological events. The team deducts this network is connected to an underground inner "supercomputer" which is sentient and knows what it's doing. It is putting obstacles to everything the team wants to do. It is as if the sentient computer is analyzing the team and playing a game of life and death with them.

2. The team manages to establish a solid colony but they didn't built it. They occupied an existing one. The team constantly finds ruins and shattered statues.

3. The team finds a computer terminal, the only one they could find and the only one they could barely understand. The hackers hack into that terminal, trying to find answers. The hackers find highly intelligent computer patterns in ones and zeros. The hackers will try and try hard to get to the sentient computer's "program".

4. The team finds an alien team (the survivors of a previous exploration team). After exchanging fire both the human and alien teams get into agreement. The human team gets confirmed about the existence of the sentient supercomputer, and both teams join forces to protect themselves from the malicious beings that live on the planet.

5. The Earth team manage to "secure" their shelter/colony and set up a lab to keep the human embryos safe. These embryos are meant to grow and become the colony's populace in the future.

6. The next stages...
What will happen next???

More notes:

The "mercenaries" mentioned in the early posts are professional soldiers who were ordered to go with the research team to the planet. There are alot of these soldiers but they work for the secret organization that organized this project in the first place. These soldiers are "mercenaries" because they work for the highest bidder on Earth and the secret organization tricked them into the one way travel to the alien planet.

[]...If I where you, I wouldn't be happy about the idea of being stuck asking other writers for ideas. I would of scrapped the concept and started something I knew that I could finish on my own.

Don't get me wrong. If I am asking for other people's ideas is not because I'm stuck, in fact I'm doing 3 storylines at the same time and I'm moving off very slow, add to that the fact that I work and study. If I'm doing a game's storyline is because I'm crazy in a good sense for trying to do many things at the same time. So I don't really need to ask for ideas, I can come up with my own but that would slow me more. Great masterpieces have come out from the minds of people who were in the same situation. But thank you for the rest of your comments. That also been very helpful.
