Nehe Bitmap fonts tut

In NeHe bitmapped font tutorial, you use glRasterpos to set the coordinated where the text is going to appear. But it only seems to work if the z component is -0.5f or lower into the screen. The problem is, I want to draw a console at 0.0f and raster text on it. Is there anyway around this. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY''RE FOOLING : YOU ?

Also another thing, anyone noticed that spaces are not printed out. They are simply ignored ? Anyone knows either why or a work around this ?
