I'm not aware of any particularly good X-file sites, BUT there are plenty for the more popular formats (maya/3dsmax etc..) that you should be able to convert to .X for use in D3D. I'd recommend checking those out...

Yea, nobody really exports soley to X, because it is pretty inflexible. You will usually find them right in the source max or maya files.

Try out TurboSquid - it has some really nice free models. Artists generally post good free models to get people interested in their work, then start charging. You can view only free models by going into advanced search and selecting 0 as the max price.
