Hello! I have build a terrain in 3D Studio Max 7 with the help of this tutorial: http://www.delta3d.org/article.php?story=2005070111291094&topic=tutorials . Now I want to split the terrain into chunks (within 3D Studio Max - btw: in Milkshape these are called "Groups"). How can I do this in 3D Max? thank you,
Select all the faces you want to seperate into a new object and find the 'Detach' button in the Polygon subsection of the Editable Poly rollout.

A prompt will ask you to name the new object.

Alternatively you can use the polygon properties thingamy to set id's for any selected faces. Milkshape recognises these as seperate groups.

thanks.
just another question. My model is a terrain. I want to split it into chunks with the same size (all should be quads).
Is there also a way to do this in 3d max?
