check out the old arcade game Plump Pop. Its basicly break out...but the paddle is replaced with two little animals carrying a trampoline, and the ball is a smaller baby animal. There are no power ups, and besides moveing left/right players can only jump. However because the ball is a baby animal there are lots of ways it interacts with the enviroment in the game.

The game features skill challange levels, bosses, and other such innovative concepts.

The biggest problem I always had with breakout is that I have relatively little control over where the ball goes. I can try to aim it at a specific block, but chances are I'll miss, and if it's late in the game, that means that I won't hit anything.

So one thought I have for a breakout game would be to give the player a bit more control over where the ball goes. Say, every time the ball hits the paddle, it fills up batteries for a set of thrusters that allow you to slightly adjust its trajectory. You could use this to get that last block, to save you if you can't catch the ball on the way down, or perhaps not use it to get a score boost.

Ooooh maybe you could control the paddle with the mouse cursor. By dragging the mouse left to right you move the paddle respectively but if you drag it up or down you can tilt the paddle to control the ball's direction even more!
