horrible performance after installing gentoo (SOLVED)

Hi. [performance] I just finished my gentoo installation, using vanilla kernel 2.6. The performance is realy bad all over, ogle gives me like one frame per 0.5 sec or so, applications has huge loading time. It seems this is the case also with small text based utilities running in the terminal too. I have installed gentoo (and other distros) before, on both this and other computers (not vanilla kernel though) and never had this problem. I tried to run # hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdd and got this output: HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted # dmesg

PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this

** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to bjorn.helgaas@hp.com

(The complaint about no device found for ALSA is probably just becouse the sound card module is not loaded at startup) I have compiled the kernel a couple of times now, and made sure I had the correct cpu type config. # cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep SMP ... # CONFIG_SMP is not set ... By the way, I did compile the kernel source the "old" way the first time: # make menuconfig # make dep # make bzImage # make modules # make modules_install After which I did a # make clean and went on with: # make menuconfig # make # make modules_install install After searching the net for info, I get the feeling that it could be the kernel version beeing picky/unstable. I have not tried to compile a 2.4 kernel yet, I want to see if I can get this version to work first. Im using a slightly old SeaGate 7200 rpm disk for this install. It is not properly mounted in the tower yet, but I have a hard time to convince myself that that would cause all these problems. [sound] After alsa is configured and un-muted, I have sound when the dvd intro is running, but nothing after that. xmms dont give any sound at all, even after configuring it to use the ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin. The command #echo blablabla > /dev/dsp does make a noice. # ogle

Anyone has any idea whats wrong with the performance/sound? Any input and comments is appreciated Thanks [Edited by - pulpfist on January 22, 2006 1:29:45 PM]
I'll admit I don't know the specific solution(s) to the problems you're having, since almost every Gentoo install is unique and I've encountered the same problems with different solutions. However, you might find some of the following useful :

I tried to run # hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdd and got this output:
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

First, have you read the Gentoo hdparm wiki page, as there is a section that describes the problem you are having (specifically the "Operation not permitted"). If you're convinced that it's not your harddrive that's causing the problem, I'd advise the following :
  • Running hdparm /dev/hda and seeing what it says

  • Boot using the Live CD, run hdparm /dev/hda from there and compare

  • If DMA is enabled from the Live CD (or you can enable it through hdparm -d /dev/hda on the CD ) simply chroot into your Gentoo installation (from the CD to spare a reboot), open up /etc/conf.d/hdparm and modify the settings in there. It's well commented, so it should be fairly simple. Add it to the default runlevel when you're done so the settings will always be used.

    After alsa is configured and un-muted, I have sound when the dvd intro is running, but nothing after
    that. xmms dont give any sound at all, even after configuring it to use the ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin.

    Did you compile the kernel module with ALSA (in which case you need to ensure it supports your card) or did you use the alsa-drivers package ?

    As for XMMS, what file type were you trying to play ? Even if you included mp3 in your use flags, you will still need to install xmms-mp3cue so that it can play them. Check and see that XMMS ( and GStreamer if you use that ) supports the music types you are trying to play. Otherwise, it's purely a problem with ALSA.

    In your message log, I noticed this : "ERROR[ogle_audio]: prepare failed: Device or resource busy". Were you running any other applications that needed to access the sound card when you were trying to play music ? If that's the issue (and I've had that happen several times) you might want to look into dmixer.

Ok, Im gonna check out the hdparm problem first...

/dev/hdd is the drive containing my boot, swap and root partitions.
After booting the Live CD, I run # hdparm /dev/hdd and all the parms is good (most of them on)

Still running from the Live CD, I chroot into the root and run the same command: # hdparm /dev/hdd, and its all good.

Then, I reboot into linux without the Live CD, and run # hdparm /dev/hdd. Now all the bits is off, and the performance is bad ofcourse. If I try to set the parms here, I get the permission error.

In all the above cases, the /etc/conf.d/hdparm file is the same:
all_args="-d1"

bash-2.05b# cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep DMA
CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PCI=y
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_FORCED is not set
CONFIG_IDEDMA_PCI_AUTO=y
# CONFIG_IDEDMA_ONLYDISK is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA=y
# CONFIG_IDEDMA_IVB is not set
CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y

I was checking the BIOS settings, but I could not find any "enhanched IDE" option.
However, I noticed that both my hard disks is on the secondary bus.
I got Windows XP on the secondary master, and linux on the secondary slave.
When I was at it, I disabled all the onboard devices (sound, modem, lan), but dmesg still complain about ALSA not finding any sound cards.
I have a SB Live! sound card, and I have snd-emu10k1 compiled as a module.
Since ALSA is such a low level thing, maybe I should compile the sound card into the kernel instead? (Does that sound strange??? :)

My current dmesg:

The listing is not complete. All I did after my last post was to follow
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml. And did so successfully.

When I run lilo, I get a warning:

Warning: The boot sector and map file are on different disks.

Quote:
Did you compile the kernel module with ALSA (in which case you need to ensure it supports your card) or did you use the alsa-drivers package ?

I think I have done both actually. The kernel config enables ALSA, and in a sub-section I enable SB Live! as a module.
I also emerged alsa at some point, and I think I got the alsa-headers from that.

The files I try to use with xmms is from a music CD. A bunch of .cda files.

One more problem I have stepped into is when I try to mount my cd device manually:

bash-2.05b# mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems

bash-2.05b# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

bash-2.05b# mount
/dev/hdd3 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
none on /sys type sysfs (rw)
none on /dev type ramfs (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
/dev/hdd1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,noatime)
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)

bash-2.05b# mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdroms/cdrom0,
or too many mounted file systems

my current fstab:

/dev/hdd1 /boot ext2 defaults,noatime 1 2
/dev/hdd3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/hdd2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto 0 0

# NOTE: The next line is critical for boot!
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

I am going to use this installation to mess up the kernel source, so I am considering to switch to some stable Debian distro instead, and maybe fix the "lilo warning" issue at the same time...

1) Install Windows
2) Run

Sorry I could not resist :) I just noticed all the linux fanboys are nowhere to be found all of a sudden.
Something an AnonymousPoster would say :D

Sure, I got windoz installed.
Im sure its possible to hack the linuz kernel from there aswell, but Im not going there :P

Back to biznizz... I Managed to get rid of the lilo warning by switching the master/slave disks etc... but it didnt help on the hdparms, so Im gonna give debian a try. Besides, XP dont like not to be the master either, and I have too much data on the XP to reinstall it.

Thanks for the replies anyway
You need to make sure that DMA is on when booting without the livecd, like you've tried. make sure you're logged in as root, then execute "/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdd"

If that fails (either with error message or doesn't really set DMA=1), and you are logged in as root, then your kernel probably does not have a proper configuration/driver for your IDE controller. Go into the kernel config and look for your IDE controller (it should be there if you do "lspci -vvv"). just compile it in to the kernel.

Yea that sounds like something I should be looking into, but at this point I have a base-only debian system up and running, and its perfect.
I used apt-get to add the stuff I need (X, twm, hdparm, dev-tools, kernel-source, ethereal, etc...)
Im realy going to mess up this box, so Im happy with that.
And the hdparms is good too.

Actually, that is the things I am going to dig into now...

Thanks
debian works because all of the ide controllers are compiled in as modules. In gentoo, when you compile your own kernel you need to make sure all your hardware has built in to kernel (or are modules and in autoload)

the DMA options need to be on in the kernel, as you have found, but the critical missing piece is the kernel driver for the ide controller.

As I have set up many, many gentoo systems before, I always do "lspci -vvv" and make sure the core hardware is in kernel configuration. It is probably the #1 source of trouble in a fresh installed gentoo system if you otherwise follow the manual.
Thanks for the tip.
I have been looking into the IDE drivers now that I am compiling a new 2.6 kernel and I think I got it right this time. However, I have another problem; the new kernel will not boot properly, and I get an error message something like:

Kernel panic: Unable to mount the root partition on unknown device (3, 67)
or
Kernel panic: Unable to mount the root partition on unknown device block (3, 67)
Something like that.

The default kernel boots fine.

I was using grub, and I had the same problem then.
Here is my lilo.conf:
lba32boot=/dev/hdaroot=/dev/hdb3bitmap=/boot/sarge.bmpbmp-colors=1,,0,2,,0bmp-table=120p,173p,1,15,17bmp-timer=254p,432p,1,0,0install=bmpprompttimeout=50# Specifies the location of the map file. If MAP is# omitted, a file /boot/map is used.map=/boot/mapvga=normalimage=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.27-2-386	label="Lin 2.4.27"	initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.4.27-2-386	read-onlyimage=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8	label="Lin 2.6.8"	initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.8	read-onlyother=/dev/hda1	label="MS Windows"

lilo output:

drob3:~# lilo
Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure.
Name change: '/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc' -> '/dev/hda'
Warning: The boot sector and map file are on different disks.
Added Lin_2.4.27 *
Added Lin_2.6.8
Added MS_Windows

The MBR I am using is on the primary master, and the linux is on secondary master.

I tried to make a initrd image using mkinitrd for the new kernel and added the initrd= option to lilo.conf, but it doesnt seem to make any difference.

Is the "kernel panic" message from the kernel itself?
Any idea why I get this problem?

EDIT:
After searching the net I found a solution to this one.
I had to remove the "read-only" option in lilo.conf from the kernel-2.6 entry...
