Non-epic fantasy games?

In general, I think that any ending short of saving the world once and for all would be a disappointment to fantasy readers/players. They're used to the plucky hero being aided by destiny and a few good friends and whupping the million-year-old archnecromancer. That's what happens in those worlds. Heck, it's all that happens in those worlds. Every other adventure ends with some badass sword getting buried, or someone being locked in stasis, or a castle getting built, and all those things happen just so the world will be prepared for the hero's arrival.

With good gameplay and decent controls, I think a game about going to the bar and losing at darts could be quite neat. Isn't that what every MMO game gets down to? Just pulling cats out of trees and finding lost shovels and exterminating rats for people?

Every fantasy game I've ever played, from the Zelda games to Warcraft, all involve some kind of epic struggle of good vs. evil, etc. Games with other settings can have all sorts of stories, many of them not so epic.

Is there some reason fantasy games don't have more down to earth stories? Would players get bored with something simple like one where a corrupt local official has taken over your family's farm and you've got to get it back? Are the epic stories, by definition, part of the fantasy game genre?

well, sometimes in rpg's you start with missions like you described above, but then you improve! so being to strong to fight farmers just makes you go and hunt demons i guess...
