Where to start

And that exorcist song doesn't scare me whatsoever. Every time I hear it I think of a beginning of a mideval battle.

Hard for some people to imagine, but that's how I role.

It just goes to show you that there is no right way to make music, because not everyone will experience it the same. And again, it has to be set into context. I could easily put '17' into the title song, and make it good. It all depends on what I'm working it into

Of course that Exorcist theme doesn't scare you, it's a cheesy motif. Note when I mentioned that movie I also included the huge addendum "(the orchestral music from Penderecki, not that god-awful minimalist piano riff that everyone rips off)". What I mentioned is heard towards the beginning of the movie while the old priest guy is in the desert, it's this shrieking, arhythmic cacaphonous noise from the strings that would rattle your bones, not the sort of thing that reminds one of a medieval battle. It's so jarring to most that they write it off as a sound effect and not the score, so I can see how you might have overlooked it.

Here's an example of creepy music used in games. It's from the intro movie of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It has its moments where it's highly thematic, but it's interspersed with these dissonant blasts from the low brass and grating shrill runs from the piccolos and violins. Notice how when you listen to the creepier parts you're almost scared of what note comes next. This is what I envision when playing a thriller-horror type game.

Thanks. And sorry about that. I was reading it last night and totally missed over what you typed. I saw exorcist.... song....scary, and concluded that it was the piano riff, lol.

Thanks for the link. When I get home from school I'll take a look

Anxious,

You want something scary, put this in your game.

OMG!
[size="2"]I like the Walrus best.
Dude, brian, I don't know what you're smoking, but that wasn't scary whatsoever.

Maybe it's because I play classical in band, and I'm used to it, but if I heard that while some monster was chasing me I'd be laughing.

No offense, but my god you're taste in music is horrible.

And, yes, it's composed extremely well.... I'll give you that. But when I'm playing the game (especially the average player, who doesn't know how to read notes on a page, much less hear the different intervals and such during a piece) I'm not thinking about the music. YOu need something to suit the mood.

Yes, the music can be phenominal, but if it doesn't fit into the placement within the game then it's useless. It's like having Michael Jordan on a little kids basketball team, but they never pass to him. The option is there, but it's just not realistic.

So I leave you with my thoughts... game music is supposed to be just there. The object of the music is to enhance the game, not replace it. Lots of times I don't even know music is playing because I'm so into the game, and it's only after my mom tells me to turn it down that I realize music/sfx/whatever was playing. It should all be there as a space filler, and maybe make the game more realistic, but it shouldn't have to be put in there for only the most musically inclined players.

"No offense, but my god you're taste in music is horrible."

First, if you're going to insult someone, at least learn to spell properly. It's your, not you're, which is the contraction of "you are". And technically "god" is supposed to be capitalized, but I'm not religious so I'll let someone else flame you for that if they're so inclined.

Second, I spent half an hour this morning before going to work scouring the archives on music4games.net before I could find anything even resembling somewhat scary music to use as an example, with the hopes that it might serve as an example. If I thought you were a worthless imbecile I wouldn't have responded to your post, nor given it a second's thought. But you know what? I didn't think that. So I took time out of my day to try and lend a helping hand, only to have the attempted favor thrown back in my face. Thanks.

Third, if you're going to assume that one random tangent of an idea to illustrate an example of a certain type of music in any way represents the whole spectrum of my musical knowledge, experience, and taste, then you sir jump to poor conclusions way too fast, and with a degree of rudeness that is as uncalled for as it is useless. I didn't say it was the Ode to Freakin' Joy, man. Get a grip. It's an example of video game music that was set to a "thriller-horror" type cut-scene.

Lastly, in a final indignant (and probably undeserved) show of goodwill, I finally found some short clips from the Exorcist to show what I really mean when I talk about scary music. Every track except #2 is worth listening to.

Wow, so now we're bashing people on spelling on an internet forum? Personally, I don't care what I type, or how I type it, especially if I'm being distracted and talked to in school.

Thank you for your time. It was just the expression of:

"Notice how when you listen to the creepier parts you're almost scared of what note comes next. *****This is what I envision when playing a thriller-horror type game*****"

that really mislead me

It's also good to know who's the REAL adult, seeing as how you took even more time to insult me rather than letting it slide. You personally don't know me 'in real life' so you can't judge my intelligence by some internet posts.

And if things like this upset you, damn, watch out for people you interact with :)

Oh, and for the record, god doesn't have to refer to our Christian God. god is a form of nature; a symbolic meaning of man and his existence. It can even mean a god like the many in greek times.

I also think it's funny that your probably the kind of person that would satisfy himself by lowering my rating, as an act of justification on an oh so hurtening response.

And I listened to those tracks. Again, you're probably a good composer, but the idea of having music to accompany a game for musical reasons is uncanny.

I guess when you say thriller I'm thinking of like a resident evil type game, where everything's rushing at you and you know something's always following you, except it's more of a thriller in a way that it's more frantic (I've yet to play what I would think of as a thriller)

I don't know, just something wild, scary, and intense

Sorry for any misunderstanding or hurt feelings. I'm just trying to get a grip on what I need to get done.

When I eventually get a demo up and put some music to it I'll show you what I mean

Cheers,
