Just because u want something to be simple and be useful rightway.... u can try any of the following
1) MEPHIS ( which runs directly from the CD )
2) Ubuntu ( same )
or any Debian based systems.
You can also try Mandrake or Mandriva.. but not sure if they have a LiveCD version
Uust to add ... if u want the fastest and most happening linux on planet... try out
Gentoo. Although the installation process is a lil pain staking.. but at the end of the day it pays off. After feeding ur gentoo with a few days of good internet connection u will find yourself running the fastest linux on planet with almost all latest softwares. Each and every software is built directly from the source-code with ur machine specific optimization turned on.. which explains itz performance.
Good linux dist?
Thank you all. I downloaded Ubuntu (not yet tried). I'm sure it will work form my porpouses...
Thank you, I will give it a look, but I already have Suse (both on the desktop and the laptop) and even if I use linux only once in a while (and never in the latest months) I'm pretty satisfied with it.

Hi
Well a lot of people vote for ubuntu,
I say use Kubuntu, its basically ubuntu just with the kde desktop which is my favorite desktop
I installed debian once half a year ago, it was my first attempt toget started with linux and it took me around 1.5 weeks to get my ISDN connection configured because they removed the devices from the udev as they switched from 2.4 to 2.6 Kernels :(
I also tried to compile these fucking nvidia drivers however my distro was pretty new and I had no clue how to do this I hope kubuntu supports all the drivers for my hardware, I really hate compiling kernel drivers
If you want to use prebuild drivers then don t install on latest hardware either wait half a year or you might have a hard time getting everything running
