Shattering Glass

I've been working on a project for some time and I have the setup that I wanted. But now I ran into a problem when I wanted to add some flair to my environment. I'm coding in Java3D and I'm trying to get a shattering glass effect up in my game environment. I tried this method: Make the animation in 3DSMax then import it and run the animation when the polygon encounters a collision. However, I have a listener running on the glass so it's really inefficient and the effect doesn't even really work. I was wondering if any of you knew some resources or had some ideas as to how I would implement a shattering glass effect. Thanks
