I'm also picking up a copy of Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestration book.
a must.

A for the music the OP posted, the instruments sound very clear, but the harmony is maybe a bit too unrestricted (free), maybe you could look into basic harmony/contrapunt rules. The music will sound more balanced with a solid harmonic basis. Of course without giving up the nice spontaneous effects you got there. Composing music is always a trade-off between rules and spontaneous creativity (imo) ..
Good luck.
Hi, I'm back. I've spent a great amount of time to improve this song. I've followed Rain 7's advice to give the oboe a more important part in the song, and I listened to Blaise's advice and switched the beginning horns with strings.

I've also completely recreated the orchestral stereo image, with strings near the outside; flutes and horns toward the middle.

The only thing that really bothers me right now is how I did the transition in some of the parts, which I must say I, I am terrible with transitions.

Well, here is the song, enjoy.

Well, its difficult to make a musical idea last until you have the proper facilities to develop an idea correctly. Whats most important for a composer is his arsenal and that which allows him to elongate his musical ideas utilizing his technique. There really is no way to circumvent this. Luckily this is a process that makes music writing easier with time! :)

I like the new version better than the old because there is less cacophany and clarity is better, but as you say, the transitions, could use some work. Try to stick with the actual Final Fantasy motifs as much as you can and imbue them with your own ideas as you go along.

What music program are you using again?
fruity loops =)
