I'm searching for a good (and free to use or public domain) texture that can be used for the milkyway. Currently I have made a texture myself and to draw the milkyway the texture is mapped on a sphere which is draw as if the camera is in the center of that sphere. Here's the result and I don't like it. The "drool" image is what I would like the milkyway to look like, but I found nothing that looks like a useable texture of the milkyway (I need one without stars, and 360° around). Sorry for this second thread here by the way, the planet map thread already had a reply and this thread is somewhat different. Oh yeah and, what orientation does the milkyway have compared to the axis of the earth or the orbit of the earth around the sun?

In other words you need one you can map 360 degrees around the sphere is that what you mean? What size resolution are you looking for? There are so many public domain space pics from nasa. What your looking for should be very easy to make. I might have something you can use in my collection of billions and billions of unused textures from our game. Ok not billions!

Yeah I map it on the inside of a sphere: the skybox is a sphere in which you're inside.

Hmm... I may be able to whip something up for you, I've never attempted this exact thing, but it should look better than your gray blob.
