What's a bummer error?

I've got this error a few times when trying to acquire images from my camera, webcam or from a scanner on other machines. All I know is that "bummer" is a derogatory term for a homosexual, and I'm fairly sure that the two are unrelated.

Nah, not necessarily...we use that word when things are bad, but not really really bad, just a 'that's life' kinda bad.

Bummer

It's a bit odd, that's all. It's a standard Windows error message, not application specific - I've had it crop up in Word, Photoshop and Jasc Paint Shop Pro before.

Are you sure it's a "standard Windows error"? I've never seen that error, for one thing, and there's no MSDN entry for MSG_OPENDS, for another.

You wouldn't happen to have a Bushnell camera/scanner, would you? Read this.
The camera/scanners I have used have been made by HP, Canon and Logitech. None of these have required any extra drivers to be installed, I am using the ones shipped with XP. (The errors happen occasionally on all 3 devices).

My immediate thought was that it could be a typo for Buffer, but on neither Qwerty nor Dvorak are the m and f keys close together.

I did discover that on Dvorak, m and t are adjacent, so that clears it up, it is really a butter error.

MSG_OPENDS is the TWAIN operation to open a (d)ata (s)ource (hence, "opends"). (TWAIN is a software API to allow applications to interact with "image acquisition devices" -- cameras, scanners, etc.). The "failure" could be any one of a number of reasons, but it's usually caused by faulty drivers. Have you tried updating your TWAIN drivers?

Just found that in MY case, the simple reason for this error was that the SOURCE device had not been specified for the ACQUIRE! Hope that helps someone!
