DX8 and OpenGL - Who is Faster?
Hey guys,
you guys may have already tried DX8 quite extensively by now and I wonder which one is faster for modern application.
I don''t mean to start a war between the followers of each API but I do wish to know some objective opinions from someone who actually done some measure.
I believe I should firstly give you guys a bit of the backgroud on why I asked a question like this. I''ve been personally doing a lot of coding in both DX7 and 8 and I''ve got a GeForce DDR 256 on my machine. One of the example is I filled the whole screen at 1600x1200x32 with 2D quad arrays with Alphablending off and draw another 2 layers on top with alpha blending on and the result was very disappointing. I''ve seen something similar in OpenGL and was apparently faster. I wonder if it''s just my illusion or OpenGL can deliver better raw speed when there is a lot of overdraw at high res.
Many Thanks in advance.

It''s driver dependant. Some cards have better GL than others the geforce has excellent GL drivers I don''t really use D3D much so I don''t know how fast it is. D3D has better support on older cards thats for certain.

Dunno if most graphics cards have updated drivers that support DX8... might have to wait for the manufacturers to come out with new drivers to support all the DX8 stuff.
DX vs OGL 1
DX vs OGL 2
DX vs OGL 3
DX vs OGL 4
OGL & D3D are as fast as your videocard is, so none is faster!

in theory there should be no speed difference in practice. but the world aint perfect
nvidia + most of the top range cards run opengl quicker than d3d
most of the other cards (ATI/3dfx etc) run d3d faster than opengl
of course sdfx cards run glide fastest of all

I am faster as long as I have some running shoes on.
TAKE THIS KIND OF POST ELSEWHERE. THIS IS AN OPENGL-ONLY BOARD DO NOT UTTER DIRECT X HERE, IT ONLY STARTS FLAME WARS.

Hmmn, I think that theses posts are OK. They are getting repeditive, but some people who come here are new, and don''t know that.
Anyways, NeHe moderates this, and last I heard, he was allowing this kind of post on his board.

Oh, and use both, let the user chose what gives him/her the best performance.

Use both? I would rather expend my energy doing about a million other things that I would otherwise not have a chance of completing. I believe the whole idea of having more than one API to choose from is so the developer has options, not more work.
