3D Lantern
this is a lantern i initially started making for a game that a friend is working on, so it was a really low detail lantern as shown in fig.1 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/Idaeus/Prev2.jpg Fig.1 Then i thought about it 'hey, that looks kind of nice' so i worked on a basic texture and a bump map (subtle bumps) to make it look more like an object, this can be seen in Fig.2 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/Idaeus/mattest1.jpg Fig.2 Soon after i had done this i showed a designer from a CG forum i post on,(i shall not post the link because i do not know GameDevs's views on plugging other sites) the designer told me that if it were to be a candle holder it would be in my best intrests to show that there is a candle inside, so i set about adding a candle. the progress is in Fig.3 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/Idaeus/Candleholder2.jpg Fig.3 Looking good i was thinking.. then it dawned on me.. there is no way a candle would stay alight ... there is nothing to stop the wind blowing it out.. and more to the point the candle is giving off no light.so i added nice glass 'walls' to the lantern and added a orange tint to the inside lighting rig. this is shown in Fig.4 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/Idaeus/Lighttest1.jpg Fig.4 I am Curently working on adding a flame to the candle. this will be animated so i will find a host for the video and let you guys see it when i am finished... untill then observe the pretty render that is Fig.5 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/Idaeus/Lighttest2.jpg Fig.5 Alot of work has been put into this relitivly simple model, so what do you think ? edit: things to be done: Add an envirnment. Add flame to the candle Add designs to the lantern

Nice lantern. But I think that you got the wrong forum, you probably want Visual Arts

Indeed, I'm moving this to Visual Arts.
Very nice work thus far, I'm not much of an artist myself, so I can't really offer you any constructive advice.
We're cool with it as long as you don't spam the forum, mentioning another site in an on-topic constructive post is no problem, otherwise keep it to the Your Announcements forum. I know CGTalk is very popular, and I'm sure anyone who wasn't aware of it already would love to have it or whatever other site you might mean brought to thier attention.
Umm, so yeah, good luck with that, and great job so far in my untrained opinion. [smile]

hmm, a bit high poly for a game, are are you going to render shots of it for a 2d game?
was thinking of converting to dynamic billboards acctually.

i don't think billboards would look very good, you'd be best just to lower the poly count and use it full 3d, that is unless its for a 2d game. but billboards aren't usually used in 2d games.

hmm, would be a rather easy model to lower the polycount on, you should have no trouble.
it is going to be running in a 3d engine

ok, then i would suggest just lowering the poly count, i think it would look horrible on billboards. as the other guy said, you shouldn't have any trouble lowering the poly count. if you want to keep the reflections on the glass i would use a very low-res reflection map with 30-40 opacity. i think that would work fine.
