terrain and sky

I calculated that in the flightsim I''m building, the aircraft has to cover a territory which is 20.000 times the aircraft dimension !!! I can create something like that in 3dstudio and use it in my project, with the appropriate textures, but is this the right way ? or there is a smarter one ? And about the sky, now I''ve a huge quad with a texture on it, but when I move the camera you can see the corners of the quads, and that is not very nice. Shall I use a sphere ? Or perhaps you can give me some better advices... Bye and thanaks again ...
Have you tried using a 2d height-map?
Have you tried cutting the single sky quad into multiple quads, and then making a sphere-like height?
I''ve got full source of a landscape using this stuff on my site. Maybe its good enough for you?
