Gamedev Game Writing Competition - Round 1 Welcome to the first running of the Gamedev Game Writing Competition the goal of the competition is to bring the members of the community together to show case and sharpen their writing talents. The focus of the competition is to explore writing as applies to video games and the associated demands of that medium. The competition is open to everyone and everyone is encouraged to enter and vote on their favorite entry! The contest will be broken down to 5 rounds each with a week to complete entries and followed by a week where readers can vote on their favorite piece and judging. The winning entry from each round will be used as basis for entries in all future rounds. Rounds Round 1 – Introduction – Winner entry 5 Round 2 – Character Profile Round 3 – Plot Sketch Round 4 – Scene Script Round 5 – Climax and Dénouement Round 2 Theme: The secret meaning of Tattoos Objective Create a 1 to 2 page character profile for a character that will play an important part in the game based the winning entry from round 1. This character must also have 1 or more tattoos these tattoos have a secret meaning that will have relevance to events in the story. Start Date 12:01am GMT Saturday the 24th of September. End Date 12:01am GMT Saturday the 1st of October. Judging criteria: style - The overall quality of the writing including grammar, punctuation, spelling, and use of language. Creativity – How effectively the subject matter and theme of the round where used as well as the overall creativity and originality of the piece. Applicability - How appropriate the submission is to the game medium and how good a game it would make. Popularity - The pieces rating based on votes from readers. Rules: -Entries must be between 1 and 2 pages. Entries that don’t satisfy this criteria will be disqualified. -Entries must be received before 12:01 am GMT 1sy of October, late entries will not be considered. -Entries not containing the theme the secret meaning of Tattoos will be disqualified. -There is no limit on the number of entries that a person can enter. -Entries must be entirely original work. -Submission should be sent by private message to TechnoGoth and must not contain any identification of the author to ensure anonymity in the popular vote round. - Lastly and Most importantly have FUN!* *contestants found not having fun during the competition will be subject to appropriate punishments**. **Reports that two contestants where caught not having fun in round one and have not be heard from since are entirely coincidental or fictional. People heard spreading such rumors should be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Mrh. I want to write an entry which builds on my first round entry, but it wouldn't be very anonymous then. :/

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

Cos I'd like to participate this time !!!
So if the second round is started, where do I see about it. Thanks :)

You have to use the winning entry from Round 1 as the introduction to your game; it's included in second post.

Although you could make your character a monk if you fit in into the scenario!

Good luck! I'm looking forward to rehabilitating my languishing creative writing skills too.

*pulls hair in frustration* There are so many interesting things that can be done with tattoos, but most of them don't work at all in a medieval, club-wielding barbarians setting. >.<

Then don't have it be a club wielding barbarin setting use your creative talents to link the setting with some that you find more interesting. Maybe the low tech barbarians only roam the wastlands that exist around large self contained cities. Don't think of the introduction as a restriction but an oppertunity.

Bear in mind that "tattoo" also means "a display of military exercises offered as evening entertainment". That works well in a medieval setting [grin].

I'm more worried that I won't get my creative energy back up in time to get pen to paper. I've got a good idea for a character, but I've burnt myself out writing a research paper constantly for the last fortnight, so I don't have a lot of writing energy left, dagnabit!! But I'll force myself to write something. Since I want to become proficient all areas of game development I can't pass up an opportunity to practice being a writer!

You know, I might just post them anyway, on a separate thread or something.
We'll see. :-/
Still, I am so happy to see myself actually be inspired and write... it hadn't happened in such a long time. Just for that this little contest is well worth it :)
