New question
Ok people here's a new question for ya... What do you think about letting the player use 2 handguns at once? Yes I know it has been done before, Resident Evil CV used it. But I want to get your inputs on it any ways. Personally I like the idea...
It's been done to the point where it's a bit cliched. Though for light gun games where you actually have the two guns in hand it can be fun.
I agree with SiCrane... but I never get tired of seeing it. Maybe I'm too much of a John Woo fan. :P
What I really want to see is a modded out cyborg with two miniguns, one in each hand. Now THAT would be cool.

When I first read this question, I thought you meant using two lightguns at once. Now that would be cool.
But having your character use two handguns at once is okay, not very original (unless you are writing an RPG, I guess) but still cool.
If you are making an alien sci-fi game, maybe you could figure out a way to use four handguns at once? [smile]

[lol] Same here! Anyways, the more guns the merrier I say [wink] Duel-wielding is a neat feature that I personally like, even if it is semi-unrealistic. I always want to duel-wield assault rifles, flame-throwers, insert other weapons here, and so on. It adds to the 'fun factor' of just mass chaos and destruction. In the Max Payne game series, nothings more fun than watching bullet time with two handguns.
A few weeks ago I got an idea for an interesting robotic enemy.
Basically, it has the standard humanoid appearence with guns instead of hands. However, its "eyes" are mounted on the two guns so it constantly see the world as though its looking through the scope of a rifle (or a sniper scope). It doesn't have a head.
Since it sees the world through the sights on its guns it has a few quirks:
1. In order to look at anything, it has to point a gun at it. This can be quite distracting if you try talking with it and it has to look at your face.
2. It can fire accuratly in pretty much any direction and in two different directions at once. If you try sneaking up behind it, it can just turn one arm around to look at you (and fire) while the other keeps looking forward.
3. Its arch-nemesis is the doornob. Since it has guns for hands, and only sees things directy in front of those guns, it's pretty much useless for anything requiring manual dexterity or heavy-lifting. It's also a mystery how it can re-load its weapons if it can barely open the container of bullets. If it doesn't involve shooting things, this robot is useless.

Anyway, using two handguns at once seems pretty neat though honestly I don't play many FPS.

[lol] Same here!
I had the same initial thought, and doing so with light-guns (or something similar (Revolution 'remote-controller' anyone?)) could be pretty entertaining if used correctly.
In any case, dual-wielding isn't at all an original concept, but it is one that a lot of people (myself included) tend to enjoy, even when used in an even less realistic fashion with rifles, etc. instead of handguns.
A few things this could possibly bring up for gameplay:
- The average player will probably run out of ammo faster while dual-wielding.
- If you're going for realism, players won't be able to open doors, operate devices, etc. while doing this (not to mention reloading, hrm? [wink]).
- It's very difficult to give the player an intuitive way of aiming the weapons independently, so they'll most likely both be used on the same target or for special moves which essentially involves 'spraying' and/or laying down fire in specific patterns.

OMG!!!
A sudden image just struck me!!
Final Fantasy in the Ol' West, with Guns instead of blades?!
(Where has gone this Wild arms cartridge, now...)

Well to be honest I was thinking that there could be an option to where you can choose whether or not you would want to use 2 handguns at once...If so just change the settings...Which is a cool idea i think...

Also not particularly uncommon. You could do this with a powerup in Blood (quite old now), and you can do this in Halo2, among other games.
I definately think having dual-wielding as an optional thing is probably a good idea, and it also potentially opens up some additional possibilities depending on the design of your game.
Can you dual-wield two different handguns for example, potentially with slightly different functionality? An example of the type of gameplay this provides can be found with the Plasma Pistol and Pistol in Halo2; a fully charged plasma pistol blast can take down a shield in one hit, and then a headshot from the human-pistol will finish off the opponent.
In any case, I definately agree with you that players should be able to not use a second weapon if they don't want to.
